CLINTON, S.C. - Four starters scored in double figures to lead the Presbyterian College men's basketball team to the 80-69 upset win over Coastal Carolina Thursday night at the Templeton Center. The 11-point victory on Senior Night gave head coach Gregg Nibert his 400th career-win.
PC snaps an 11-game losing streak against a Chanticleer team that had won six of its last seven contests. With the win, the Blue Hose avenge a 63-52 loss from earlier in the season, a game in which Coastal heavily out-rebounded the Blue Hose 44-22. In the 11-point win at Templeton, PC out-boarded the Chants 39-37.
The Blue Hose improve to 10-20 overall and 6-11 in the Big South Conference with one game to play in the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Winthrop. The Chanticleers drop to 21-9 and 12-6 in conference action.
Seniors Jordan Downing (Huntersville, N.C.) and William Truss (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) made their final game on the hardwood of the Templeton Center one to remember as they combined for 32 points, scoring 18 and 14 points, respectfully. Downing went above 1,500 career points on the night and completed the double-double with a team-leading 10 rebounds. Markus Terry (Johns Creek, Ga.) led all scorers on the night with a season-high 19 points, 16 of those points coming in the second half. In addition, DeSean Murray (Stanley, N.C.) had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Hose.
Warren Gillis tallied 18 points for the Chanticleers, while Josh Cameron had 16 and Badou Diagne added 10 points.
The Blue Hose shot 53 percent (26-for-49) in the win, including a 58 percent effort in the second half. PC held the visitors to 39 percent (26-for-67) from the field. PC was 23-of-39 from the foul line, while Coastal was 10-of-17.
PC held Coastal Carolina to 23 points in the first half, which tied a season low. PC held the Chants to just 29 percent from the field, while the Blue Hose shot 48 percent from the field in the first half. Murray had 11 first-half points, while Downing tallied 10, as the Blue Hose built an 11-point lead at intermission.
PC got out to an 8-7 lead at the first media timeout of the first half with 15:05 to play, but the Chants scored the next five points to take back the lead. Downing broke the scoring drought for the Blue Hose with a three-pointer, but Cameron made all three of his foul shots on the other end to stretch it back to a four-point lead for the visitors, 15-11.
Truss' two made foul shots and Terry's good freebie cut the score to just one point with 10:21 to play in the first half. Gillis made a three for Coastal with 9:32 on the clock, but PC went on a commanding 13-point scoring run to take a 27-18 lead with 4:33 to play in the first frame.
Shivaughn Wiggins snapped the scoring drought for the Chants with a pair of free throws, but Downing completed the 3-point play on a jumper and free throw to give the Blue Hose its first double digit lead, 30-20, with 3:41 to play. PC closed out the half with a 7-3 run to take an 11-point, 34-23 halftime lead.
PC opened the first half with a 14-7 run to take its largest lead of the game – an 18-point lead, 48-30, with 14:40 to play. The Chanticleers scored the next ten points to cut it to eight points, 48-40, with 11:54 remaining. The teams went back and forth before Terry scored eight straight points, including back-to-back treys for the Blue Hose to give the team a 16-point lead, 62-46, with 6:10 on the clock.
The Chants went on an 11-4 run to cut the score to nine points, 66-57, with just under four minutes remaining. After a dunk by Terry, the visitors scored six straight points to cut it to five, 68-63, with 2:51 to play. That would be the closest that Coastal would get, as the Blue Hose outscored the Chants 10-4 down the stretch.
