CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian College baseball dropped its Big South Conference opener on Saturday, falling to Gardner-Webb in a 6-0 loss at the PC Baseball Complex.
PC(13-5, 0-1 Big South) could not solve Gardner-Webb's (11-7, 1-0 Big South) Erik Heiligenstadt, who threw a complete game shutout in which he allowed four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.
The two teams meet in the second game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Four different Blue Hose hit safely in Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.), Peter Johnson (Seattle, Wash.), Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) and Rob Koski (Bel Air, Md.). Johnson ran his hitting streak to eight straight games in the effort.
Senior lefthander Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) took the loss to move to 2-1. Dees threw six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts. Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.) allowed one unearned run in two innings of work and Michael Trebendis (Fayetteville, Ga.) threw a shutout ninth.
Gardner-Webb tagged the Blue Hose for three runs in the top of the third on three hits. Collin Thacker hit a two-out, two-run double before Sam Fulginiti tacked on another with a single up the middle to give Gardner-Webb a 3-0 lead.
The Runnin' Bulldogs used squeeze plays in the fifth and sixth to widen their gap, 5-0. The sixth-inning run went as unearned due to the runner taking third on a failed pickoff attempt.
Gardner-Webb added another two-out run in the top of the eighth when Henry Rundio lifted a double to the right field corner to score Matt Simmons for a 6-0 lead.
