DAVIDSON, N.C. – Presbyterian College baseball's five-game win streak came to an end in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday night at Davidson's Wilson Field, as the Wildcats hit a walk-off single for a 5-4 Davidson win.
PC moves to 11-4 and will face Richmond at noon in Davidson. The Blue Hose toppled the Spiders in the ninth on Friday, 6-3. Davidson improves to 6-4.
Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Davidson's Sean Foy produced a leadoff double and PC intentionally walked the next batter. Hayden Deal (Newton, N.C.) entered the game and was forced to load the bases after a wild pitch moved the runners over. PC secured the first out on a fielder's choice at home, but the Wildcats' Tyler Agard delivered a pinch-hit walk-off single for the 5-4 win.
Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.) and Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) each posted two hits on the day.
Sophomore reliever Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) took the loss to move to 2-1. Davidson's Matt Saeta improved to 3-0.
Davidson scored its first run with the help of a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fourth. A single put two runners on with nobody out before Sauer recovered with a flyout and a strikeout. The junior ended the inning with another flyout, but not before an Andrew Pope double gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
PC wasted no time answering. Brandon Martin started the fifth by ripping an 0-1 pitch down the right field line for a leadoff triple and came home two outs later on a Weyenberg base knock.
A Foy RBI single and an Acosta two-run single in the bottom of the frame pushed Davidson back ahead, 4-1. Russell Thompson (Alcolu, S.C.) entered and struck out Pope to end the fifth with no further damage. Thompson struck out all four batters he faced in the game.
PC clawed back within one in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Peter Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) and Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) set up a Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) sacrifice bunt and Martin cashed in, hitting a two-run single to center for a 4-3 score.
The Blue Hose tied the game an inning later. Rob Koski (Bel Air, Md.) made his Blue Hose debut when he entered the game in the top of the seventh and drew a leadoff walk. A sac bunt moved the freshman over and a throwing error allowed him to take third. Johnson then delivered with one out, beating out a double play chance to score Koski and tie the game at 4-4.
Brian Kehner (Marietta, Ga.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief.
McRae extended his hitting streak to nine straight games, tying Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) for the team's longest of the season.
