ROCK HILL, S.C – The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped the final game of its Big South series to the Winthrop Eagles at the Winthrop Ballpark on Sunday, 7-2
PC moves to 24-27 overall and 4-17 in the Big South. The Blue Hose next head to The Citadel on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. first pitch against the Bulldogs. Winthrop improves to 35-16 on the year and 13-8 in League play.
Each team scored a run in the third and fourth innings before a three-run fifth lifted Winthrop to the eventual win.
Eight different Blue Hose hit safely on the day. Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) and Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) each drove in a run.
Tanner Chock (Loris, S.C.) took the loss to move to 2-5 on the year. Aaron Lesiak (Greenville, S.C.) and Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) each allowed a run in 2.2 combined innings of work and Hayden Deal (Newton, N.C.) struck out two in the eighth.
The Blue Hose struck first in the third on three straight singles from Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.), Peter Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) and Lizanich, whose base knock to left gave PC a 1-0 lead.
Winthrop posted three singles of its own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 1-1.
In the fourth, Martin scored Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) on a fielder's choice following base hits from Midkiff and Rob Koski (Bel Air, Md.). PC took a 2-1 lead, only to see Winthrop even the score again on a Tyler Asbill RBi single in the bottom of the inning.
Two run-scoring singles and an error put Winthrop up for good in the fifth, but catcher Rob Koski helped limit the damage by gunning down a runner trying to steal third to end the inning.
Winthrop added another run in the sixth, using a leadoff double and an Asbill single for a 6-2 lead over the Blue Hose. A Blake Thomas solo home run an inning later widened the gap to 7-2, the eventual final score.
Josh Strong earned the win, improving his record to 7-3. Asbill and Babe Thomas led the Eagles offensively with three hits and two RBI apiece.
