CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.) drove in four of Presbyterian College's five runs against Charleston Southern on Thursday night, including the go-ahead run in the 11th inning to help PC to a 5-4 win in the series opener at CSU Ballpark.
PC improves to 26-27 overall and 5-17 in the Big South Conference. Charleston Southern moves to 22-27 on the year and 9-13 in League action. The two sides play game two on Friday at 2 p.m.
The Blue Hose led 4-1 behind a three-run sixth inning, but the Bucs tied the game in the eighth and forced extra innings. Russell Thompson (Alcolu, S.C.) earned the win in relief to improve to a team-best 6-1. Aaron Lesiak (Greenville, S.C.) picked up his first career save.
Tied 4-4 after eight innings, the game reached the 11th and PC broke through. Ryan Hedrick (High Point, N.C.) hit a leadoff single and moved over on a Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) sacrifice bunt. Weyenberg then cashed in on a single through the right side to give the Blue Hose a 5-4 edge.
Lesiak entered the game after a leadoff walk and soon secured three straight outs to nail down the save.
Weyenberg's first RBI tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning before the Blue Hose took the lead in the sixth. Peter Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) gave the visitors a 2-1 lead via RBI groundout shortly before Weyenberg hit a two-run single that pushed PC ahead by three, 4-1.
Brian Kehner (Marietta, Ga.) produced a quality start in a hard-luck no decision. The sophomore allowed only one run in six innings, striking out two Bucs.
Charleston Southern tied the game in the eighth. Chase Shelton, Cole Murphy and Sam Remick each drove in a run to pull the home side even.
Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) went 3-for-5 on the day. Weyenberg and Hedrick each posted two hits. The Blue Hose also committed zero errors in the win.
Denis Buckley took the loss to move to 3-4. Remick went 3-for-4 to lead the Buccaneers on offense.
