SEASON PREVIEW

"It was a good fall with a lot of hard work from our guys, including a lot more weight training, which we hope to see help our durability this season," commented head coach Elton Pollock. "We have high expectations every time we take the field, so I am looking to see a high level of compete, hustle and intent to everything we do this weekend to open the year."

Catchers

Sophomore Jeremiah Boyd leads a young group of catchers into the 2020 season after he hit .223 with eight extra-base hits and 15 RBI's last season. He will be joined by JUCO's Jake Wyandt and Willie Gordon, along with freshman Allen Brown.

Pollock on the Catchers: "Boyd has separated himself from the group behind the plate and he will catch as often as possible this season. He has been really good at the plate and we look for him to be a key piece in the middle of our lineup this season. (Jake) Wyandt is extremely athletic and could have the ability to see time in the outfield as well.  We need to just get him into that game mode, but he does have tremendous leadership ability. Willie Gordon has been very effective behind the dish managing the game. Allen Brown has shown tremendous upside at the plate as a freshman."

Infielders

Senior Jimmy Marcelli leads the infielders into the season coming off a year where hit .321 with 14 doubles and five home runs, along with a team-high 48 RBIs. Garrett Jones is expected to see a lot of time at third base this season along with Graham Mitchell. Freshman Landon Shaw is expected to be the Blue Hose everyday shortstop. Andrew Livingston and Mitchell could see time at first base.

Pollock on the Infielders: "I think our group has taken a huge leap forward over the last week in our scrimmages and I see this group being very talented moving into the season. They're led by Jimmy Marcelli, who has done a really good job and is healthy heading into the season while swinging a strong bat, so we are excited by what he has shown heading into the season. Garrett Jones has transitioned over to third base along with Graham Mitchell, and both have shown a lot on the defensive side, with it boiling down to who is more effective at the plate determining who will see more playing time to start the year. Landon Shaw will slide into the shortstop position as a freshman, as he has been as good as we have had at that position in my time here. He has shown incredible maturity and ability as a freshman, and we will look for him to bring consistent play on both sides of the ball. Andrew Livingston will work in at first base, using his experience offensively and defensively to help lead the position as a whole."

Outfielders

Senior Zacchaeus Rasberry returns after an All-Conference year a season ago that saw him hit .327 with 74 hits and a DI school record 23 stolen bases. He will handle the centerfield duties once again in 2020. Hunter Grover is another returning piece for the PC outfield. Grover's versatility could allow him to see time at all three spots in the outfield. Newcomers David Sweat and Kyle Decker are both expected to see significant time in left and right field, respectively.

Pollock on the Outfielders: "We will look to Zacchaeus Rasberry for his veteran leadership, as we look for him to take the bull by the horns and figure out where best he fits into the lineup card for us. We are looking for him to have a big year to lead this group of outfielders. Sweat is a pesky left-handed hitter who we expect to see time in left field to start the season and has a good feel for what to do in the right situations and the game doesn't speed up for him. Kyle Decker has emerged in right field as a good arm for us with good speed, with the hope we can use his speed on the bases on the offensive side."

Pitching Staff

Eric Miles returns after a 7-4 year last season that saw him rack up 84 strikeouts over 93.0 innings, and he is expected to be the Blue Hose Friday starter in 2020. Both Reagan Fowler and Jake Rice are expected to work into the PC weekend rotation. Other arms the Blue Hose return include Clark DearmanGrayson StonekingLuke MatthewsMatt Norton, and Austin Paradis, along with new faces such as Kyle BensonDarien RorabeckAlex Flood and Peyton Knight.

Pollock on the Pitching: "It starts with Eric Miles for us on Fridays, as he has earned that opportunity, being a big-time competitor and you have a chance to win every time he toes the rubber, so I am excited about Eric and his leadership this season. I am expecting to see Reagan Fowler and Jake Rice, hopefully on the weekends.  We just have to work on building up pitch counts and making sure everyone is in the best situation to succeed. We are excited about the opportunities all three of them present for us. In the bullpen and during the midweek, Clark Dearman has really developed, changed his whole body and developed really good hand speed. Grayson Stoneking is another arm we will look to rely a lot on, along with Kyle Benson and Luke Matthews. In the late innings, we'll be looking to Matt Norton, as well as lefty Austin ParadisDarien RorabeckAlex FloodPeyton Knight are some new faces that we will look to develop."
