Baseball Set to Host Spartans on Tuesday Afternoon

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team returns home on Tuesday to open a four-game home week against USC Upstate beginning at 3 p.m. at the PC Baseball Complex. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ on Tuesday.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team used the power of junior Eric Toth's bat who connected on his fifth home run of the spring in game one and totaled six RBI's on Saturday to earn the Presbyterian College baseball team a doubleheader sweep by the score of 10-9 in 10 innings and 6-5 in 9 innings at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
• The Presbyterian College baseball team opened Friday's doubleheader with a 7-6 victory over Longwood at Buddy Bolding Field behind three RBI's from Zacchaeus Rasberry. In game two, the Lancers bounced back with an 8-5 victory to earn a split of Friday's twin bill.
• Over the four-game series, Veach paced the offense with a .389 average, while Toth hit .353 with a double, home run, and six runs knocked in. Rasberry knocked in a team-high seven RBI's in the series.
 
Series History
• Presbyterian and USC Upstate meet on Tuesday for the 16th time in the Blue Hose DI era with PC holding a slim 13-12 lead in the series with the Spartans. Upstate earned a 13-0 victory in the first meeting of the spring between the two teams on March 23rd.
• PC and Upstate are still slated to meet in Spartanburg on April 30-May 1 for a three-game series to wrap up the season series.
 
Scouting USC Upstate
• USC Upstate comes into Tuesday's game at 23-9 after dropping two-of-three this weekend from Charleston Southern.
• The Spartans are led offensively by Jeff Taylor who is hitting .342 with five doubles, three triples and a pair of home runs. Jason Matthews checks in with a .326 average including a team-high 13 doubles with 23 runs driven in. As a team, Upstate has six players with at least a .300 average this spring.
• Jordan Marks leads Upstate on the mound this spring with a 6-1 record to go along with a 1.62 ERA in 61.0 innings. Marks has 70 strikeouts compared to just 10 walks.
• Out of the bullpen, Kevin Davis sits with a 0.59 ERA and a 1-1 record with a team-high five saves this spring. He has 26 punchouts in 15.1 innings.
 
Veach Earns Olerud Watch List Honor
• Presbyterian College infielder & pitcher Chris Veach has been named to the 10th annual John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award watch list, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation on Tuesday.
• The deep pool of talent resulting from several veteran players returning for an extra season granted by the NCAA in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, plus the influx of new talent from the last two seasons, has created a unique pool of 17 top candidates for the 2021 Olerud watch list.
• The list also includes teammates from two Power 5 schools, three players who have already been honored with the Olerud Player of the Week award and four players who were on the watch list for the 2019 award.
• The Chapin, S.C. native is continuing to lead the Blue Hose offensive attack with a conference leading .348 average thru 16 games. He's had a base hit in 14 of 16 games he's played in this spring.
• Veach has already earned a pair of Big South Freshman of the Week honors this spring as well.
 
Strong Opening Statements At The Plate
Chris Veach currently paces the Blue Hose offense with a .356 average to begin the 2021 season as he has hits in 18 of his first 20 collegiate games he's played in and 31 total during that stretch. 
• Freshman Ryan Ouzts sits in second on the team currently with a .299 average thru the first 20 games. Ouzts is third on the team totaling four doubles.
• JUCO Transfer Eric Toth has a .281 average so far in 2021 as he is the team leader with five long balls. He earned his second save of the season pitching the 10th inning on Saturday in a 10-9 game one win over Longwood. He tossed a season-high 5.2 innings in relief during PC's 14-inning victory over UNC Asheville on April 6.
Sean Klein, another JUCO transfer currently has five doubles and a pair of home runs with nine runs driven in thru 21 contests.
 
Record Chasing
• Senior Eric Miles needs three strikeouts to move into second in the Blue Hose D1 record book. Miles currently sits with 217 career strikeouts.
• Miles needs 11.2 innings pitched to past Brian Kehner for fourth in the DI record book for innings in his Blue Hose career
• Senior Zacchaeus Rasberry needs four stolen bases to move into first in the Blue Hose D1 record book. Rasberry has 32 career stolen bases.
• Rasberry's next triple will move him into a tie for fourth in D1 history with his sixth career triple as a Blue Hose.
