PC Battles Asheville on Tuesday Afternoon

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team opens a four-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon as they welcome in UNC Asheville for an 3 p.m. first pitch at the PC Baseball Complex. This game is a makeup as a part of the March 5-6 postponed series between the Blue Hose and Bulldogs.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team was unable to overcome a three-run home run in game one against UNC Asheville falling 8-5. The Bulldogs used a three-run seventh, in game two, to pick up the series victory, 7-6 on Saturday at Greenwood Baseball Field. Brody Fahr led the offense on Saturday with a 4-for-7 day at the plate.
• With his five strikeouts in game one, Eric Miles passed Beau Dees for third in the Blue Hose DI record book in strikeouts. Miles currently sits with 212 strikeouts in his Presbyterian career.
• In the series finale, Eric Toth, Zacchaeus Rasberry, and Fahr each tallied two hits. Rasberry and Toth both connected on home runs in the game. Toth leads the team with four home runs this spring.
Duncan Howard matched his career-high in just his fourth collegiate start going 6.0 innings and picking up five strikeouts. He hit both of those benchmarks in the final game of the series against Eastern Kentucky on February 27.
 
Series History
• PC and UNC Asheville have met 40 times in the Blue Hose DI era prior to Tuesday's matchup. Presbyterian holds a 25-15 head to head record over the Bulldogs with Asheville taking 2-of-3 in the series last weekend.
• In the 2019 three-game home series sweep of the Bulldogs, Presbyterian hit at .301 clip which was led by Johnny Cook at a .556 average. Ashby Smith and Jonathan White both hit .444 in the three-game series.
• Presbyterian's pitching staff held the Bulldogs to four earned runs over 27 innings led by Reagan Fowler tossing 6.1 innings as he didn't allow an earned run in his start.
 
Scouting UNC Asheville
• Asheville comes into Tuesday's matchup with an 8-14 record and sits 7-10 in Big South play following a 2-1 weekend against PC last time out.
• Brandon Lankford paces the Bulldog offense with a .350 average including a team-high five home runs and 17 runs driven in. Dominic Freeberger has 10 extra base hits (six doubles, two triples and two home runs) to his stat line this season.
• Freeberger is 1-0 without allowing an earned run over four appearances with one save in 5.1 innings pitched this spring. Kole Harris sits at 2-0 in nine appearances with four starts and 26 strikeouts.
 
Veach Continues to Pace The Offensive Attack
• The Chapin, S.C. native is continuing to lead the Blue Hose offensive attack with a conference leading .381 average thru 15 games. He's had a base hit in 14 of 15 games he's played in this spring.
• Veach has already earned a pair of Big South Freshman of the Week honors this spring as well.
• He currently leads the Big South with a .381 average, while also ranking seventh in the country as he has struck out once every 21 at bats this spring.
• Veach ranks 27th in nation with an average of 1.60 hits per game this spring.
 
Miles & McDaniel Honored With Weekly Honors
• Presbyterian College baseball pitchers Eric Miles and Charlie McDaniel have been named Big South Starting Pitcher and Co-Freshman of the Week respectively for games played March 22-28, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
• Miles was dominant on Saturday in game one of the doubleheader with CSU as he recorded 7.0 shutout innings en route to a 3-0 series clinching win over Charleston Southern. Miles totaled seven strikeouts while only allowing four singles and a pair of walks to earn his second win of the spring.
• In just his third collegiate start, McDaniel tossed a complete game allowing just one earned run to earn his first career victory over Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon. The Sanford, Fla. native allowed just one run and six hits to earn the win. McDaniel faced one batter over the minimum over the final five innings. McDaniel's complete game was the Blue Hose first since May 17, 2019, when Jackson Dean spun a complete game against Charleston Southern.
• Both pitchers were a part of a pitching staff that allowed just two earned runs over 27.0 innings against Charleston Southern this weekend. 
• This is Presbyterian's third freshman of the week honoree in six award cycles as Chris Veach earned a pair of awards already this spring.
 
Strong Opening Statements At The Plate
Chris Veach currently paces the Blue Hose offense with a .381 average to begin the 2021 season as he has hits in 14 of his first 15 collegiate games he's played in and 24 total during that stretch. 
• Freshman Ryan Ouzts sits in second on the team currently with a .333 average thru the first 15 games. Ouzts is second on the team totaling four doubles.
• JUCO Transfer Eric Toth has a .273 average so far in 2021 as he is the team leader with four long balls after two big flies over the weekend. In the CSU contest, Toth recorded 0.2 innings of relief work with a strikeout. He pitched the final 3.0 innings in a 7-6 win over Radford recording his first win of the season. Toth grabbed his first save of the season against CSU to clinch the series.
Sean Klein, another JUCO transfer currently has three doubles and a pair of home runs with eight runs driven in thru 16 contests.
 
Record Chasing
• Senior Eric Miles needs eight strikeouts to move into second in the Blue Hose D1 record book. Miles currently sits with 212 career strikeouts.
• Miles needs 15.2 innings pitched to past Brian Kehner for fourth in the DI record book for innings in his Blue Hose career.
• Senior Zacchaeus Rasberry needs five stolen bases to move into first in the Blue Hose D1 record book. Rasberry has 31 career stolen bases.
• Rasberry's next triple will move him into a tie for fourth in D1 history with his sixth career triple as a Blue Hose.

 • The Blue Hose remain at home on Friday, April 9th and open a three-game weekend set with Radford beginning at 3 p.m. from the PC Baseball Complex. The series wraps up on Saturday at 11 a.m. with a doubleheader.
