Blue Hose Head to Rock Hill with Tournament Berth on the Line

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Baseball team gets set for a three-game battle with Winthrop as the Blue Hose fight for a top four seed in the 2021 Big South Championship beginning on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. from the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill. The two teams will close out the regular season on Friday with a twin bill set for noon.

The Blue Hose and the Eagles along with Radford are currently fighting for the fourth and final spot in the 2021 Big South Championship with the Blue Hose holding a slight edge on the Eagles and Highlanders entering play on Thursday.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team used a season-high 16 hits combined with a four-run tenth to take game one over High Point on Saturday at Williard Stadium by the score of 13-11 in 10 innings. The Blue Hose finished the sweep in the nightcap with a 10-6 victory over the Panthers.
• In game one, Klein connected on a pair of homers in a game for the second time in a week as he accomplished the same feat a week ago against Gardner-Webb.
Kyle Benson earned the victory in game one going the final 4.1 innings and allowing one earned run while striking out a pair. Benson's 4.1 innings pitched matches a career-high for the senior in a Blue Hose uniform.
Eric Toth totaled a season-high five strikeouts in game two to record his sixth save of the season. With his sixth save on Saturday, Toth tied Ethan Wortkoetter for fifth in the DI record book with six saves.
 
Series History
• The Blue Hose and Eagles have met 33 times in Presbyterian's DI era with Winthrop holding an 18-15 lead in the all-time series. Winthrop took three of four from PC during the 2019 season which included a 12-5 victory during the 2019 Big South Championship.
• Winthrop recorded a three-game sweep of the Blue Hose in 2018 during Presbyterian's last trip to Rock Hill.
 
Scouting Winthrop
• Winthrop enters the weekend at 18-25 following a 7-6 victory over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday in Rock Hill. Winthrop is one of three teams fighting for the final spot in the 2021 Big South Championship slated to begin next Thursday in Fayetteville.
• The Eagles are led offensively by Ty Hooks who sits with a .351 average which includes four doubles, one homer and 27 runs knocked in. Joey Tepper enters play this weekend at .314 with nine doubles and three homers.
• Spencer Yankle leads Winthrop with 14 doubles and 31 runs knocked in.
• On the mound, Colten Rendon leads the Eagles with a 4-2 record and a 3.93 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched. Rendon has totaled 24 strikeouts and walked only seven.
• Cody Whitten is winless in six appearances as he has made three starts. Jason Crumley is 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA in 15 appearances with two of those being starts for Winthrop.
 
Recent Success
• During PC's last two weekend series, reigning Freshman of the Week Brody Fahr is leading the team with a .520 average as he has knocked in seven runs during that six game stretch. Kyle Decker is at .500 during the same six game stretch.
• In the same stretch, junior Sean Klein has a team-high four home runs and has knocked in nine runs. Klein has a pair of multi home run games coming against Gardner-Webb and High Point.
• Dating back to his April 30th appearance at USC Upstate, senior Kyle Benson has made a team-high seven appearances and has earned a pair of victories in 13.2 innings allowing five earned runs while recording 10 strikeouts.
 
Record Chasing
• Senior Eric Miles needs 18 strikeouts to move into first in the Blue Hose D1 record book. Miles currently sits with 231 career strikeouts.
• Miles needs 3.1 innings pitched to pass Tanner Chock for third in the DI record book for innings in his Blue Hose career
Zacchaeus Rasberry's next triple will move him into a tie for fourth in D1 history with his sixth career triple as a Blue Hose.
• Junior Eric Toth with his next save will move into a tie for fourth in the Blue Hose DI record book for career saves. Toth has recorded six saves this season to lead PC.
• Toth needs one more save to move into a tie for third in the single-season DI record book. Hayden Deal sits in third with seven saves.
 
Fahr Named Freshman of the Week
• Presbyterian College baseball freshman infielder Brody Fahr has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week for games May 10-16, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• After picking up an RBI in Tuesday's midweek action at Charleston Southern, Fahr recorded three straight games with three hits as a part of the Blue Hose sweep of High Point over the weekend.
• He had one three-hit game before the weekend as he matched his career-high in all three contests. In game one on Saturday in High Point, Fahr set a new career-high with three runs knocked in during a 13-11 extra-inning victory.
• He finished the week with a 3-for-5 performance in game two on Saturday as he scored twice en route to the first PC road sweep since April 2019 against USC Upstate.
 
Wyandt Named to Buster Posey Watch List
• Presbyterian College catcher Jake Wyandt has been named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List, as the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced.
• Wyandt is fourth on the team in hitting with a .278 average this season over 18 games played. He leads the team with a .409 on-base percentage while sitting second on the team at a .500 slugging percentage.
• Wyandt is one of four Blue Hose this spring with multiple home runs as he has connected on a pair of long balls. He's tied for the team lead with three stolen bases. Wyandt has a .992 fielding percentage this spring as he has only one error in his 18 games played.
• Behind the plate, he has thrown on six would-be base stealers and picked off one runner.
• The list spotlights 80 catchers including a pair from the Big South Conference. The award, formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, was created in 2000 to honor college baseball's top catcher in the NCAA Division I ranks.
 
Veach Earns Olerud Watch List Honor
• Presbyterian College infielder & pitcher Chris Veach has been named to the 10th annual John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award watch list, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation on Tuesday.
• The deep pool of talent resulting from several veteran players returning for an extra season granted by the NCAA in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, plus the influx of new talent from the last two seasons, has created a unique pool of 17 top candidates for the 2021 Olerud watch list.
• The list also includes teammates from two Power 5 schools, three players who have already been honored with the Olerud Player of the Week award and four players who were on the watch list for the 2019 award.
• The Chapin, S.C. native is continuing to lead the Blue Hose offensive attack with a conference leading .348 average thru 16 games. He's had a base hit in 14 of 16 games he's played in this spring.
• Veach has already earned a pair of Big South Freshman of the Week honors this spring as well.
