FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Presbyterian College women's wrestling team turned out a great performance at the Robert Horton Memorial Open hosted by Emmanuel College, having five wrestlers with place finishes including
Samantha Miller who took home 1
st place at 101lbs.
Miller didn't have an easy start as her first-round opponent was Angelina Gomez of Emmanuel, the 2021 national champion. Miller had no other thought besides winning and she did exactly that, pinning Gomez with 25 seconds left in the first period for a huge opening win. That would give Sam all the confidence she needed as she pinned her remaining three opponents, all of them all-Americans, for an undefeated 4-0 record and 1
st place at 101lbs.
Jaslynn Gallegos and
Ainslie Lane both competed at 116lbs. and both with place finishes. After receiving a first-round bye, Gallegos won by way of technical fall over Life and Limestone to make her way to the championship match. There she met with King University's Sage Mortimer, but Gallegos was unable to come out on top as she took home 2
nd place.
Lane also received a first-round bye and her first official match came against Mortimer. The freshman product from King won that match, but Lane came back to win four straight matches. Her first two she was able to secure first period pins over Emmanuel and Lyon College. Then she would go on to win a 12-1 technical fall over Limestone to compete for 3
rd place. A very tough match against Kasey Baynon of Emmanuel, but the junior showed her skill and won an 8-2 decision to finish 3
rd.
Catherine "CG" Bertrand found herself in the 123lb. weight class as she had an impressive tournament. The freshman went 4-1 on the day which scored her a 2
nd place finish. She won her first three matches, one by decision, one by technical fall, and one by pin fall. She then faced Melanie Mendoza of King University in which she fell to the eventual champ. CG ended strong though with a 16-5 technical fall over Life to take 2
nd place.
Sierra Marie Miller saw her first action since early December as she weighed in at 136lbs. The freshman had a bye in the first round before making quick work of Limestone, winning by pin fall in just 35 seconds. Miller was handed a loss in the semifinals, but came back with two wins, both by way of pin fall, to capture 3
rd place.
Gabriella Shevlin was the last member to compete for the Blue Hose as the New Jersey native went 2-2 on the day. She has been getting a heavy workload as a freshman and going up against some of the best wrestlers in the country, but the experience has paid off as Shevlin was able to win by pin fall twice, once over Dayna Gomez of Life and the other over Skyla Armstrong of Emmanuel.
