MARIETTA, Ga. – After a strong opening to the 2022-23 campaign, the 8
th-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling squad aims to keep their momentum going for a busy weekend over the next 48 hours that entails a trip to defending NAIA national champion Life University in Georgia. Claiming three individual titles last Sunday at the Princeton Open, the Blue Hose will engage in a head-to-head duel with the Running Eagles on Friday evening before staying in Marietta the next day to take part in another multi-team event hosted by Life.
6:45 p.m. will mark the start of PC's matchup with LU on a day that serves as the official season-starter for the Running Eagles. Prior to taking on Presbyterian, Life will firstly battle Avila University (Missouri) tomorrow at Upper Gym, turning their attention to a Blue Hose group that has already made an impact just one date into the fall campaign.
At the aforementioned tourney in New Jersey – the first multi-team event hosted by an NCAA D-I school in women's wrestling history – Presbyterian shined with five competitors capturing a top four standing in their respective weight class, headlined by a first-place title from
Samantha Miller (101),
Sierra Marie Miller (130), and
Paige Wehrmeister (136) in an astounding collegiate debut.
Additionally, the senior tandem of
Ainslie Lane and
Cassandra Lopez posted 3
rd and 4
th place finishes respectively, allowing PC to largely dominate the rest of the field en route to a statement-making November performance.
Of the three Blue Hose championship placers at Princeton, there were a total of zero losses between the Millers and Wehrmeister in 11 attempts, setting the stage for PC's women's squad to publish an 18-5 overall record between their six competitors at the Ivy League site.
Friday's duel against Life will deliver an intriguing matchup between two programs who enter the early stages of the season with an abundance of potential in their respective divisions. The Running Eagles put together a flawless 11-0 record in head-to-head bouts a year ago with the exclamation point of NAIA national champs to cap things off. Under the direction of head coach Ashley Flavin, LU will compete with the Blue Hose on back-to-back days, with several other programs joining them for Saturday's meet.
