GAFFNEY, S.C. – Looking to topple the Limestone Saints for the fourth consecutive time in dual format after a hot start to the 2022-23 year, the Presbyterian College women's wrestling squad will prep for a short drive to Gaffney for their second head-to-head meeting of the fall at the tail end of the weekend. Facing their in-state foe at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, the Blue Hose will aim to continue their one-sided series with the Saints in their final match of the month and last appearance before the team's home opener post-Thanksgiving.
Already claiming nine top-four placements in a pair of profitable tournaments with an additional dual against Life thrown in the mix, Presbyterian and their four separate 1
st-place titles will hope to keep their perfect record against Limestone intact on Sunday. In previous affairs, the Blue Hose have gotten the better of the Saints by scores of 38-11 in 2019, 17-5 in early '21, and 40-18 to begin last year's slate with a bang.
Head coach Zach Schaeffer's club has continued that momentum since their last encounter with Limestone 12 months ago, living up to the billing as the 6
th-ranked team in the country by the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) based on their exceptional multi-team play. Three of the four PC athletes who are ranked in the top five of their weight class have already featured at least one personal championship, including a perfect 8-0 start to the season on seven technical fall victories by freshman sensation
Paige Wehrmeister.
Samantha Miller,
Ainslie Lane, and
Sierra Marie Miller join the newbie in the realm of nationally-ranked competitors in the early stages of the campaign, the latter currently sitting as the highest of the bunch at #3 in the 130-lb. gathering. Overall, the Blue Hose have calculated 39 wins over three events, 25 of them from the quartet of wrestlers who find themselves among the highest-ranked grapplers in the country.
Running away with a 22-point triumph the last time that Presbyterian matched up with Limestone, coach Schaeffer's unit posted the W in seven of the 10 standard bouts in Gaffney, along with three additional victories in bonus matches. Due to the team's limited schedule, that season-opening contest would be the only head-to-head dual of PC's slate, having to wait a full year until another match of a similar nature which happened last Friday against defending NAIA National Champion Life in Georgia.
A fellow contestant in the Princeton Open that kicked off the November lineup, the Saints have since taken part in back-to-back duals at Liberty and at home earlier this week versus Brewton-Parker, winning the former 26-7 over the Flames but dropping a 31-13 decision to the Barons on Tuesday. Following Sunday's joust with the Blue Hose, Limestone will not return to Gaffney until January 29, with eight straight dates away from home in their immediate future.
While Presbyterian hasn't yet competed in Clinton, they will do so in the next dual once wrapping things up in Gaffney, facing off with Mount Olive on December 4. PC will then return to the Templeton Center on January 20 for their second and final home battle, taking on Ferrum.
