EMORY, Va. – The seventh-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team more than lived up to that lofty billing in their third tournament appearance of the fall on Sunday afternoon in the Commonwealth State, quickly gaining the audience's attention and never looking back at the WASP Open (hosted by Emory & Henry). In a statistic that had to be seen to be believed, the Blue Hose ended the day with eight of their nine grapplers posting a 4
th-place finish or better, along with a whopping six top-3 finishes.
NOTABLES
- Among the myriad of eye-popping maneuvers showcased from head coach
Zach Sheaffer's club, true freshman
Paige Wehrmeister continued to build up her gargantuan reputation to even greater heights with yet another 1
st-place championship in the 136-pound class, her third such distinction in a row. The first-year Missourian improved to 14-0 on the season with four more W's at the neutral site, publishing seven technical fall victories over her last 10 matches, including the title-clinching triumph over Emmanuel's Samantha Larios by a 12-2 difference.
- Following the rookie's protection of her increasing win streak, 101-pounder
Samantha Miller put forth her third straight tourney with a 2
nd-place finish or better by seizing the runner-up recognition behind a 3-1 mark. Moving to 11-2 since November, the junior only needed 45 seconds to dispose of Life University's Devyn Gomez to stand on the podium yet again, collecting a pair of pinfall W's to denote PC's seventh top-two placement of 2022.
- Four other Presbyterian competitors landed at 3
rd in their respective weight class, starting with third-year West Virginia native
Sierra Marie Miller (one of four nationally-ranked wrestlers on the roster). The third time in just over a month sitting inside the top four or higher at 130, Miller downed two Emory & Henry opponents in rapid succession to bounce back from a 1-2 start to the afternoon, beating both of them in a combined time of one minute and 11 seconds.
-
Ainslie Lane and
Cassandra Lopez – two of PC's most efficient performers with 22 wins between them – each matched Miller's 3
rd-place distinction across the 109 and 116-pound brackets, respectively. The former achieved 3
rd for the second tournament in a row after sitting out the Life Open, not letting a six-match win streak's stoppage earlier in the day rattle her by blanking Lincoln Memorial's Ashley Morris in a 10-0 technical fall. The latter mirrored that same result to clinch 3
rd in her own series, toppling Life's Kory Phillips by that exact margin to reach 4
th-place or better in all three Blue Hose tourneys to this point.
- Catherine "CG" Bertrand penned Presbyterian's sixth podium-placement of the day by reeling off three consecutive triumphs in the 123-lb. unit, two by pin and another of the TF variety. She joined Lopez, Lane, and Wehrmeister's earlier achievement of grasping her final win of the event via technical fall, reaching her ninth win of the still-young campaign in the process.
- Not to be outdone by the rest of the astoundingly-deep roster,
Gabriella Shevlin and
Isabella Badon each submitted a 4
th-place acquisition in the 143 and 155-lb gatherings, syncing up for decision wins by a combined clip of 12-2 to continue PC's plow through the rest of the field over the weekend. Rookie and Virginia native
Olivia Waller added a 6
th-place shoutout in class 123 for good measure, ensuring that all nine Blue Hose entries led to a profitable outcome, persisting the notion of Presbyterian's elite performances in the multi-team format.
- Since the Princeton Open over one month ago that signaled the beginning of the campaign, coach Shaeffer's club has scooped up a ridiculous 17 top-four finishes in only three tournament appearances, approaching Sunday with nine and leaving Emory with eight more. When factoring in PC's three duals thrown into the mix, the Blue Hose have accumulated 80 wins this year with the biggest dates on the schedule still ahead, clutching a 34-4 added record between the trio of Wehrmeister, Lane, and Sam Miller.

UP NEXT
- After another statement-making effort that seems to solidify Presbyterian's most dangerous work amidst the tournament setting, the Blue Hose will enjoy a 12-day rest period for the holidays before returning to the fold on December 30 for a monster event in the Windy City.
- Taking part in the renowned Midlands Championships in Chicago, Illinois at the close of the calendar year, PC will eagerly await one of the season's most anticipated tournaments after last December's event was canceled due to health and safety concerns. From there, the Blue Hose will bring in the New Year with the NWCA National Duals over a two-day period from January 6-7, held in Louisville, Kentucky.
