ALBANY, N.Y. – The 2023 edition of the Armbar at the Armory, an eight-team round robin tournament to feature the Presbyterian College men's wrestling squad, yielded mixed results for the Blue Hose on Friday evening, obtaining their first dual win of the young campaign over Sacred Heart (29-21) before dropping a 44-5 decision to Northern Colorado in the nightcap.
Outgunning the Pioneers six-matches-to-five to march back to a .500 mark in head-to-head meetings, Presby emerged as the victors in a contest that displayed six lead changes by claiming three of the final four bouts on hand.
While the finish to the night wasn't exactly at head coach
Mark Cody's wishlist, PC was able to produce some promising results by a predominantly-young lineup, namely a 2-0 trek from sophomore
Reed Douglass in the 174-lb. class.
The second-year rising star – competing in his native state of New York – showed out against both SHU and UNC by achieving back-to-back technical fall victories that added up for a combined clip of 46-14.
Over the first six meetings across the Sacred Heart encounter, neither side was able to steer control of the match to their favor in a true chess match between the first-time combatants. The tide drastically shifted once Douglass and
Caleb Roe (184) garnered consecutive techs, polishing off the eight-point W with a 2:18 pin by newbie
Nathan Carnes in his Presbyterian debut.
Carnes and 157-pounder
Eli Holiday posted the team's first two falls of the still-infant season, while
Trenton Dominguez and
Ryan Luna helped contribute to the Pioneers' undoing with decisions of 12-7 and 12-4 respectively.
The Blue Hose wouldn't be able to slow a Northern Colorado adversary who had claimed their first three wins of the year by a ridiculous difference of 122 points, keeping that train chugging after downing Buffalo 35-6 earlier in the evening.
When the dust settled, Presbyterian had tallied a split at the neutral site to bring their overall mark to 1-2 with a hefty strength-of-schedule tab to boot.

UP NEXT
- Coach Cody's club has wrapped up their path for the month of November, nearly done with their dates of competition in the '23 calendar as a whole. Only one more day of in-season grappling awaits PC until January, staying on the road in just over two weeks for two more neutral-venue affairs.
- Held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (hosted by Franklin & Marshall), Presbyterian will lock up with both Michigan State and Bloomsburg on December 3 as their pre-SoCon journey rolls along. Once those duals have been completed, the blue and garnet will wait 33 days until they hit the mats again for the F&M Open at the same facility.
