Blue Hose Grasp 18 Wins at Midlands, Led by Runner-Up Prize for Henlee Haynes

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Keeping up her immaculate tournament record by tallying her third top-two placement of what's already been a solid debut year, Henlee Haynes of the Presbyterian College women's wrestling team put together the highest finish of Saturday's Midlands Championships for the 13th-ranked Blue Hose squad, ending the evening in 2nd-place across class 170.

One of a quartet that concluded their stay in Chicago as a top-four representative throughout their respective weight class, Haynes' silver stride was the most notable step for a PC unit that accommodated 18 victories spread between 11 entrees.

An event that is always held in high regard nationwide, Presbyterian's movement at the 59th annual Midlands bracket involved a 4th-place standing for Alyssa Mahan (123), a 5th-place nod courtesy of Madeline Kubicki (143), and a 6th-place tilt for Cassia Zammit (130).

Each of those grapplers recently finished their very first semester for head coach Brian Vutianitis' program, showcasing the depth that the Blue Hose already harness despite their immense youth.

Continuing an ongoing theme of stiff competition for the club during the opening two months of the campaign, PC will next submit their name to the NWCA National Duals in Iowa beginning on January 5.

NOTABLES

- Overall, the blue and garnet gathered six wins by pin on Saturday alongside four other W's via technical fall. Kubicki posted the highest win count of the group (four), carving a pair of 10-0 results and a 20-second pin over a fellow nationally-ranked opponent (UW-Stevens Point).

- Starting red-hot by gaining a similar 20-second fall followed by a 10-point tech, Mahan downed her adversary from Northern Michigan in her penultimate bout of the tournament, needing only 36 seconds to add her second pin of the day and individual win number 15 on the year.

- Haynes' silver medal comes after an identical standing at the season-starting Princeton Open back in November and a championship prize at the Wasp Open just over two weeks ago in Virginia. The newbie has earned a victory 13 times, nine of which have taken place in the bracket system.

- Isabella Badon, Ta'Niya Roberts, Charlee Shuler, and Reagan Riddick rounded out Presby's win count at the NOW Arena, bringing the team's total to 120 triumphs since the beginning of the season.

UP NEXT

- More information on next week's NWCA National Duals will soon be revealed, a one-on-one style tourney to which PC picked up three ranked wins last time out against Adrian, Lock Haven, and Sacred Heart.

- That particular event was held in Louisville, although the '24 edition won't be Presbyterian's first visit to the state of Iowa this season. Coach V's crew made the journey to legendary Carver Hawkeye Arena prior to Thanksgiving, a site where they again defeated then-#5 SHU in the final session of the "Trail Blazer Duals".
