Baseball Welcomes in Georgia State for With Doubleheader on Saturday

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team opens a three-game home series on Saturday with a doubleheader set for 1 p.m. as the Blue Hose welcome in Georgia State to Clinton. The series finale will take place at 1 p.m. in Clinton.

About the Blue Hose
• PC returns home for it's second four-game home stretch as the Blue Hose welcome in Georgia State to Clinton for three games beginning on Friday afternoon. Presbyterian looks to rebound after an 11-6 setback on Tuesday afternoon against Georgia. The Panthers enter the weekend winning their last five with the msot recent taking place on Tuesday at Alabama State.
 
Scouting the Panthers
• Georgia State enters the weekend at 6-3 following a 6-4 victory on Tuesday over Alabama State. The Panthers have won their last five games with a four-game sweep of Brown preceding the win over the Hornets.
• Max Ryerson leads Georgia State with a .360 average as he's tallied two doubles, two homers and five RBIs to begin the season with 10 runs scored. Will Mize is at .350 with two homers. Jesse Donohoe is hitting .333 with eight RBIs to his name to open the year. 
• As a team, the Panthers have connected on 19 homers and hit .289 thus far in 2023.
• On the mound, Zach Ottinger has pitched five scoreless inning with nine strikeouts to begin his 2023 season. Ottinger has also tallied a save in the opening nine games for Georgia State.
• Georgia State's top starter is Ryan Watson who's allowed one earned run over eight innings with nine strikeouts in his two starts to begin the season.
 
 
Head to Head vs the Panthers
• Georgia State holds a 5-3 edge over the Blue Hose in the DI head-to-head series between the two schools with the Panthers taking two-of-three from PC in Atlanta last season.
• In last year's head-to-head between the two schools, Jay Wetherington led the way for Presbyterian going 6-of-13 with a double and three runs knocked in during the three-game set. Chase Hughes tallied a .364 average with two doubles and Dalton Reeves was at .308 with three doubles.
• On the mound, Duncan Howard earned a win going six innings with seven strikeouts and one earned run allowed against the Panthers.
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks
• Following his two home run game on Tuesday, sophomore Joel Dragoo is tied for second in the league with three homers in the early going.
Kyle Decker with his five stolen bases is tied for the top spot in the league.
Fenix DiGiacomo is tied for first in the league in wins while also sitting in the top 10 nationally thus far. DiGiacomo has only issue one walk this season and is tied for the top spot in the Big South.
Luke Gibson and Tanner Smith with their two saves both sit in the top 10 in the naiton in saves in the early 2023 campaign.
 
Pitching Strong to Begin 2023
• The Blue Hose pitching staff has come out of the gates fast in 2023 as the staff begins the week with an ERA of 4.09 as a team which ranks tops in the Big South. PC's led by Luke Gibson (1.23) and Fenix DiGiacomo (2.31) early on in 2023.
• PC has also limited the walks early on with 13 walks over the first 70.1innings pitched for a WHIP of 1.17.
• As a team, PC is tops in the country in walks allowed per nine innings at 1.66, seventh in strikeouts-to-walk ratio at 4.23 and 19th in shutouts thru the opening eight games. 
 
McDaniel Earns Big South Co-Freshman of the Week Honors
• Following six shutout innings in his first college start on Wednesday, Presbyterian College baseball freshman Mason McDaniel (Sanford, Fla.) has been named the Big South Co-Freshman of the Week for games played Feb. 20-26, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
• McDaniel dazzled in his first college start against Western Carolina on Wednesday as the Blue Hose left-hander tossed six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in the victory over the Catamounts. He scattered just two hits and two walks throughout his outing to get the win. In the start Wednesday, he tallied six strikeouts in the first four innings while only allowing one hit and totaling three innings of three up and three down. McDaniel worked around a pair of baserunners in the fifth without harm before getting his final strikeout in the sixth to earn his first collegiate win.
 
Newcomers Getting PC Early Victories
• On Saturday, Blue Hose pitchers Fenix DiGiacomo and Luke Gibson started their Blue Hose careers strong as PC downed the Hoyas 5-2 in the middle game of the three-game weekend series. DiGiacomo got the ball rolling on Saturday with a start spanning 5.2 innings allowing four hits and one run en route to a victory in his PC debut. Gibson finished it off for the Blue Hose recording the final 10 outs allowing one solo home run and striking out four to earn the save. Gibson and DiGiacomo were teammates at Patrick Henry CC before coming to Clinton for the 2023 season.
• In his first college start on Wednesday, PC was led by freshman Mason McDaniel tossing six scoreless innings to lead Presbyterian to a 3-0 win over Western Carolina. McDaniel struck out eight Catamounts en route to his first college win on Wednesday afternoon.
 
2023 Preseason Honors
• Catcher Dalton Reeves was named to the league's all-conference team as selected by Perfect Game.
• DI Baseball has tabbed a host of Blue Hose on the conference's top prospects in the next few drafts. RHP Duncan Howard, RHP Fenix DiGiacomo, Catcher Dalton Reeves, RHP Colbey Klepper, RHP Tanner Smith and OF Jay Wetherington were apart of the 2023 Draft Rankings.
Joel Dragoo was tabbed by the publication in the 2024 Big South Prospect Rankings.
Jake Randolph, Trey Fenderson and Amman Dewberry were selected to the Impact Freshman in the league on the list by DI Baseball.
 
Newcomers Join the Blue Hose Family
• Head Coach Elton Pollock was busy in the offsesaon with the addition of 16 new faces to the Blue Hose family.
• The incoming class includes Evan Cuervo, Jay Allred, Jake Randolph, Trey Fenderson, Travis Camp, William Nobles, Ryan Becker, Lorenzo Rios, Kyle Mueller, Luke Gibson, Tyler Mecchella, Fenix DiGiacomo, Mason McDaniel, Eli Bowery, Jeremiah Hampton, Amman Dewberry.
