CLINTON, S.C. – A national top-ten finisher in each of the past two seasons, the Presbyterian College women's wrestling team has announced their full slate for the 2024-25 campaign.
Unveiled by head coach
Brian Vutianitis as he enters his second full season with the first-ever Division I university to sponsor a women's wrestling program, PC brings an obvious sense of expectation into the new year thanks to a boatload of success in recent times.
Since November of 2022, the Blue Hose have achieved 58 individual medals (otherwise known as a top-three finish) when wrestling in a tournament. A PC grappler has won gold 22 times in the past two seasons, along with 14 silvers and 22 bronze nods.
Presbyterian came in 8
th-place at the national tournament in the team rankings last spring, boasting three All-Americans (who were all freshmen at the time) and will return to the mat next month (
Madeline Kubicki,
Cassia Zammit, and
Henlee Haynes).
PC has witnessed six All-Americans (or top-ten placers at nationals) under Vutianitis' watch, setting up a new roster for success that is a little bit older and a lot larger in numbers.
The Blue Hose now have 29 wrestlers on the official roster, its biggest since starting the program in 2019. Fifteen of those 29 are at least sophomores, hoping to follow in the footsteps of last season's squad which won over 250 matches and scattered 103 pins.
A full layout of PC's 2024-25 schedule can be found near the top of this page, or on the graphic below.
NOVEMBER
- For the third year in a row, Presbyterian will begin their season in the northeast by entering in the Princeton Open. They'll head to New Jersey on November 3, the same bracket where they've won six top-three awards in the past two seasons.
- The following Friday, PC will be center stage for a historic event in Charleston as they go head-to-head with Campbellsville for what's being dubbed the "Throwdown on the Yorktown".
- That dual against CU will be held on a Charleston Battleship, the first-ever women's collegiate wrestling match to take place on an active vessel. The Blue Hose will join six other men's teams who are set to compete on that evening, boarding the USS Yorktown at 7:00.
- On November 17, coach V's gang begins a series of three straight events on their home base. They'll host the Blue Hose Challenge, with numerous local universities visiting Clinton for a smattering of matches on multiple mats.
- Seven days after that, PC will joust with their archnemesis in the Southeast Region as regular powerhouse King comes into Templeton Gymnasium on November 24.
- Presby's showdown with the Tornado will cover half of a Tri-Dual on that day, with the second opponent still to be determined.
DECEMBER
- PC's hectic start continues on December 3 for their third consecutive home encounter, welcoming Mount Olive for what is scheduled to be their last dual for over a full month.
- After facing the Trojans, the Blue Hose are strictly in a tournament format until the calendar flips to January. They'll travel to Virginia for the WASP Open (hosted by Emory & Henry) on December 13, a bracket that Presby has dominated as of late.
- Coach V's group published six top-three placers at the E&H Tournament in 2023, going on to better that number last year with eight wrestlers who earned at least a bronze prize in that same event.
- As is customary, the Blue Hose will finish December by participating in the famed Midlands Championships, an annual tourney in Chicago of major prestige.
- Those brackets will be held the day before New Year's Eve in the Windy City, with PC winning 12 individual matches in each of their last two appearances in that tournament.
JANUARY
- Presbyterian's third tournament in a row will be enacted on January 4 when they venture to Alabama to compete in the "Red Lady Open" (hosted by Huntingdon).
- From there, the schedule takes another turn into dual territory for the rest of the month. PC will head west to Iowa on January 10 and 11 to once again wrestle in the NWCA National Duals against some of the most well-rounded programs in America.
- When the Blue Hose were last in the NWCA National Duals nine months ago, they knocked off three top-10 foes in a period of 24 hours (#9 New Jersey City, #8 Lock Haven, and #4 Colorado Mesa).
- The victory over CMU (28-19) still rates as the highest dual win of Presbyterian's history, marking their seventh W over a nationally-ranked opponent in the last two campaigns.
- After squaring off with multiple top-tier schools at a neutral site, PC will then head to Georgia for the Life University Duals on January 15. A 10-day break will be ended by another long journey north on the 25
th, submitting their name to the NYS Journeymen Duals in Albany.
FEBRUARY
- Once the calendar turns to February, Presbyterian will be near the end of the regular season tunnel and will have their eyes fixated on more championship hardware. Their last tournament showing before the postseason is set for February 1, headed to Maryland for the Frostburg Bobcat Open.
- Coach V and company will conclude the regular season back in Clinton – what will be their first home match in nine weeks – as they host another triple threat. They'll go one-on-one with Emory & Henry and The Apprentice School on February 8, the final home date for four seniors.
REGIONALS & NATIONALS
- It will all come to a climax on February 21 when the Blue Hose go to Emmanuel for the NCWWC Southeast Regional Championships, a precursor to the National Tournament in Iowa.
- Eleven wrestlers for PC have claimed a top-three standing at the Regional bracket in the past two years, a feat that guarantees your spot in the National Championship Tournament the next month.
- Coralville, Iowa will be the site of the 2025 National Title tourney, a two-day event from March 7-8. After winning 11 individual matches on the grandest stage in 2023, Presby followed that up with an even more impressive performance last spring (16 W's and a trio of freshman All-Americans).
