BLUE HOSE CHALLENGE
- Living up to their preseason national ranking of #5 after capturing four gold medals and three silver prizes at the Princeton Open when they last entered into a tournament, PC's women will host a multi-team event on Sunday that includes numerous other Southeast Region institutions.
- Lincoln Memorial, Newberry, Allen, Life, Bluefield State, Apprentice School, Huntingdon, Montreat, St. Andrews, and Mount Olive will all be represented this weekend for the second tourney to incorporate PC on the young season.
- Head coach
Brian Vutianitis has his squad firing on all cylinders to begin the fresh campaign, holding national championship aspirations after back-to-back top-ten finishes in the past two years.
- When the Blue Hose ventured to Princeton two weeks ago for their first action of the semester, they put together perhaps their best-ever performance in a tournament atmosphere by winning 49 matches from 16 wrestlers.
-
Chiara Barbieri,
Chloe Dearwester,
Cassia Zammit, and
May Cuyler combined for a 15-0 record in the Northeast as they seized four individual championships. Thirteen of those wins occurred by either pin or technical fall.
VICTORY ON THE YORKTOWN
- The Blue Hose were front and center in a landmark day for the sport last weekend, wrestling on the USS Yorktown battleship in Charleston against premier NAIA program Campbellsville.
- It was the first collegiate women's dual to be held on an active military aircraft carrier, and the quality of the match was fitting for this surreal setting.
- Presbyterian emerged as the victors in a 23-21 tally, a contest that entailed seven lead changes and a technical from 207-pounder
Ella Beam that clinched the match in the last moments.
- Trailing by a pair, Beam needed either a TF or a pin to erase the possibility of a loss. She completed that task in three minutes and 20 seconds by reaching a 10-0 lead, the 8
th-ranked grappler in her weight class nationwide.
- Coach V's unit profited from earlier victories by Dearwester, Zammit, Cuyler, and
Carina Giangeruso in the Campbellsville W, their ninth dual win since November 2023.
- Zammit, Dearwester, and Cuyler have yet to lose a match thus far this season, combining for a 15-0 record and nine pins.
SCOUTING DAVIDSON
- Shifting gears to the PC men's meeting with SoCon foe Davidson, it'll be an intriguing mix between two nearby schools that are trying to establish / maintain early-season momentum.
- The Wildcats and head coach Nate Carr will roll into Clinton with two straight dual wins over Belmont Abbey and St. Andrews, the latter being a 51-0 blowout yesterday.
- Davidson started the 2024-25 slate with four runners-up at the Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia, aiming to stay perfect against Presby with a 5-0 all-time mark when battling the Scotsmen.
- In their two recent dual wins, the Wildcats have added up for five technical's and are already halfway towards equaling their win count from all of last season.
LAST TIME OUT
- Despite dropping a 32-11 decision to Sacred Heart in the season-opener back on November 3, the Blue Hose and head coach
Mark Cody would trend in the right direction last weekend when traveling to Appalachian State for the Mountaineer Invitational.
- In that crammed Boone bracket that featured nearly all schools from the SoCon, both
Reed Douglass (174) and
Morvens Saint Jean (285) offered up a silver placement. Additionally,
Rey Ortiz and
Joshua Roe snatched 4
th place in class 141 and 165 respectively.
- Holding a three-match winning streak before coming up short in the title round last Saturday, Douglass was selected as the Adidas / Game One PC Student-Athlete of the Week, one of the many rising stars on Presbyterian's roster.
