CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The seventh-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team closed the NWCA National Duals on Saturday evening as the consolation champions with two more wins over top-15 schools, downing #11 Wartburg and #6 Colorado Mesa.
After finishing at 3-2 in this exact bracket each of the past two winters, the Blue Hose bettered that mark in Cedar Falls by winning four of their five encounters in the last 24 hours (all versus nationally-ranked foes).
PC's path to fifth place included a 31-14 cruiser against Wartburg – a bout where they never trailed at any point and led by as many as 20 – which was followed by a 24-20 thriller versus CMU.
This is the second consecutive time that head coach
Brian Vutianitis' crew has ended the NWCA National Duals by defeating Colorado Mesa. In 2024, they earned a nine-point decision over the fourth-ranked Mavericks, still the program's highest-ever ranked W.
Improving their dual record to 9-2 with a spike up the national rankings seemingly on the way, the Scotsmen will remain on the road next week when they visit Life University for a 6:00 PM start in Alpharetta.
NOTABLES
- Presbyterian faced little trouble in their first affair of the day, a 17-point command over the Knights in what was the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The ensuing battle against CMU was a different story, necessitating a late rally from the Blue Hose to erase a 9-1 hole.
- Trailing 13-9 at the halfway point, coach V's unit engaged a 14-4 spree that turned the tide in their favor. What was once an eight-point deficit morphed into a six-point advantage heading into the 207-lb. match, essentially guaranteeing the W.
- Held out of action for the first month of the campaign due to injury, 2024 freshman All-American
Maddie Kubicki has wasted little time in getting back to form. Her 17-6 technical fall in the CMU victory was her ninth straight win, a result that gave PC their first lead of the night.
- They never relinquished their grip after that moment, as rookie
May Cuyler (last month's Midlands champion in class 160) extended her personal winning streak to 10 matches with a six-minute pin that boosted the lead to 23-17.
- Sophomore
Alyssa Mahan had her hand raised in both matches against the Mavericks over the last 12 months, grinding out a 14-10 standard decision that helped the Blue Hose establish momentum after the slow start.
-
Chloe Dearwester and
Carina Giangeruso – two of Presby's most polished freshmen – now have a combined record of 38-2, with the former staying perfect at 19-0 with a technical in the CMU triumph.
