Women’s Wrestling Chases National Championship in Iowa

CORALVILLE, Iowa – Doubling their number of National Qualifiers from seven last year to 14 in 2025, the sixth-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team is in pursuit of an NCWWC National Championship. The tournament begins on Friday in Iowa, held at the Xtream Arena and will begin at approximately 11:00 AM eastern time.

Punctuating their best-ever season by winning the Southeast Region team title two weeks ago, the Blue Hose and Regional Coach of the Year Brian Vutianitis will aim for the ultimate prize over the next two days.

Those that advance to either the National Semifinals or Consolation Semifinals will continue on to the second day of the tournament, a feat that three PC wrestlers achieved last March.

The National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships features NCAA programs from the Division I, II, and III levels. This will be the sixth year that the National Tournament has been held, with the Iowa Hawkeyes being the defending champs.

In January, the NCAA announced that women's wrestling had been approved as its 91st national championship event beginning in 2026. Therefore, this year's event is historic as it will be the final time that the coalition of wrestling organizations will be governing the National Tournament.

TAKING HOME THE GOLD

- Three hundred and twenty wrestlers from around the country will be competing at tomorrow's tournament in the ten standard weight classes, serving a double-elimination format.

- PC's batch of 14 qualifiers is the most that they've ever taken to the event, with seven of them making it to this stage for the first time and seven others making their National Championship debut.

- Last season, the Blue Hose were led by three freshman All-Americans who all finished the tourney inside the top ten:

Maddie Kubicki (143 lbs. – 4th Place)
Cassia Zammit (130 lbs. – 5th Place)
Henlee Haynes (170 lbs. – 8th Place)

- Four Presbyterian wrestlers achieved a Regional Championship in Emmanuel to go into Nationals with a high seed: Haynes, Carina Giangeruso, May Cuyler, and Ella Beam.

- Five others were presented with a second-place nod to punch their ticket to Iowa: Kubicki, Zammit, Alyssa Mahan, Chloe Dearwester, and Paige Wehrmeister.

- Coach Vutianitis has directed nine wrestlers past the 20-win mark this year, as the team has collected 29 first-place trophies when in a tournament setting.

- Six PC grapplers are ranked inside the national top ten for their weight group (the latest poll was released by the NWCA on February 7), showcasing one of the deepest rosters in America.
