CHARLOTTE, N.C. ?
The Presbyterian College baseball team plated two early runs, but two big
innings by Charlotte pushed the 49ers past the Blue Hose by a 13-5 score
Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Hose now stand at 2-10 on the young season.
Head coach Elton Pollock's team jumped on top in the first frame as Jesse
Harmon singled up the middle to lead things off. After advancing to second on a
wild pitch, Mack Hite bunted him safely to third. Rookie Gabe Grammer plated Harmon
with a grounder to the shortstop, making the score 1-0 in favor of PC.
After Charlotte tied things up in its half of the first, the Blue Hose
regained the lead in the second. With two outs, senior Jared Combs belted a
double to left center field. He scored on Zac Rhinesmith's double down the left
field line, putting Pollock's team up 2-1.
In the bottom of the second stanza, the 49ers scored four runs on three hits
while PC committed an error, allowing the fourth run to score. The home team
tacked on a run in the third inning while adding five more in the fourth.
Pollock's
team shut the 49ers down over the fifth and sixth innings before Charlotte's bats went to work for a run in
the seventh. The 49ers added a run in the eighth, making the score 12-5 at that
point.
Just like in every other contest, the Blue Hose continued to battle. In the
ninth, rookie Kenny Bryant homered to right field for the fourth bomb of his
young career.
With one
away, Matt Hill beat out an infield single to the shortstop. Jeffrey Tatum
earned a walk, putting runners on first and second. Rhinesmith stepped to the
plate and reached safely on a throwing error by the shortstop. The errant throw
allowed Tatum to get to third base while Hill scored an unearned run.
Drew Wingo came to the plate and hit a deep shot to center field, which allowed
Tatum to score. However, Harmon grounded into a fielder's choice, where as the
second baseman made the putout to end the game.
Harmon, Wingo and Bryant led the way for PC with two hits each. Hill, Combs and
Rhinesmith all notched one base knock for the Blue Hose.
Pollock's team had six players that saw time on the mound, but Stewart Curry
ended up taking the loss. He now stands at 0-1 on the year.
For the
game, PC scored five runs on nine hits while making three errors. Charlotte had 13 runs on 15 hits while also
committing three miscues.
The Blue
Hose will return to action Friday afternoon with their first home game of the
season. PC will host VMI at 3 p.m.
