CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team was unable to get the win Friday afternoon in the series opener against
Radford, falling by a 19-5 score.
The Blue Hose fall to 2-14 on the season and 0-6 in Big South Conference play. Radford
improves to 6-8 on the year and 1-1 against conference competition.
The
Highlanders took an early lead in the second frame by plating two runs. Nick
Minter singled to lead things off before swiping second. He then moved to third
on Reggie Keen's single to right. Mario Duarte's infield single scored Minter,
putting the visitors up 1-0. Radford went up 2-0 on Will Naylor's sacrifice
fly. Ty Rivers eventually singled home Duarte before Brett Mollenhauer plated
Naylor. Jeff Kemp's double off the left field wall made the score 5-0 in favor of the visitors. Four of the
runs came with two outs.
With two
outs in the bottom of the second stanza, Jared Combs belted an offering to the
left center field fence, but Bobby Cole flied out to the left fielder to end
the scoring threat for PC.
Radford
jumped out to a 10-0 lead by scoring five in the third frame. However, PC began
to chip away at the visitors' advantage by notching a run in the bottom half of
the stanza. Rookie Gabe Grammer drilled one of Aerik Taylor's offerings over
the right field fence, putting the score at 10-1.
The
Highlanders got things going again in the fourth inning with two outs. Robert
Lamas singled and moved to second on Will Naylor's walk. Matt Nodelman was
unable to get a called third strike against Rivers, loading the bases. Brett
Mollenhauer drove home both Lamas and Naylor, making the score 12-1 in favor of the visitors. After a
pitching change, Jeff Kemp's single to left allowed Rivers to come home from
second.
In similar
fashion for PC in the bottom half of the inning ? just like the previous frame
- Kenny Bryant launched a lead-off homer over the right center field fence. Two
innings later, Zac Rhinesmith got into the act. With one out, he hammered a
pitch over the left field wall, making the score 13-3.
Micah
Black, who came in during the fourth inning, continued to shut Radford down.
After keeping the visitors scoreless through the seventh inning, the
Highlanders' Rivers singled to start the eighth. However, Black induced
Mollenhauer into a beautiful double-play ball as Bryant threw down to Grammer,
who returned the ball back to Bryant for the first two outs of the frame.
The Blue
Hose were unable to get out of the frame unharmed. After two walks and a hit
batter, Reggie keen doubled home all three runners for a 16-3 advantage.
With two
outs in the ninth, Radford was able to score three runs after PC got the first
two batters of the inning out.
Head coach
Elton Pollock's team did not give up, plating two runs in the ninth before
ending the game with the bases loaded. With two outs, pinch hitters Jeff Tatum,
Dane Fehr and Andrew Williams all got on base. Jesse Harmon's walk plated Tatum
while Mack Hite reached on an error, scoring Fehr.
Taylor went 7.1 innings to pick up the
win. He gave up three runs on seven hits. Chris Powell took the loss for Pollock's team. Powell worked two innings while giving up seven
runs on nine hits.
Stewart
Curry, Matt Nodelman, Black and Charlie Abbott all saw time on the mound for
PC.
The teams
will return to action tomorrow for a 2 p.m., start at the PC Baseball Complex.
