CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team put forth a tremendous effort, pouncing on Air Force for seven runs
through the first two innings en route to the 9-6 victory Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Hose improve to 4-15 on the season after winning their second straight
game.
After
pitcher Jesse Harmon shut down the side without hesitation in the top of the
first, he connected on Alex Truesdale's first offering of the game, drilling
the scoreboard that sits behind the left center field fence, putting the squad
up 1-0.
Cory Lyda
singled and moved to third on Kenny Bryant's base knock. Zac Rhinesmith singled
home Lyda for a 2-0 advantage. Then, Jared Combs drilled a shot to left,
driving home Bryant for a 3-0 lead after one.
After the
Falcons plated three runs in the second, PC regained the lead in its half of
the second. With one away, Drew Wingo singled and eventually came around to
score on Mack Hite's single through the left side. Lyda laid down a beautiful bunt
down the third base line and beat out a throw to load the bases. Bryant brought
two home on his single that made its way just past the outstretched glove of
the third baseman.
The Blue
Hose took a 7-3 lead when Lyda swiped second and came home on the errant throw
by the catcher.
Head coach
Elton Pollock's team tacked on two more runs of the contest in the fifth. Combs
singled and moved to third on Gabe Grammer's base hit to right. He then scored
on Andrew Williams' RBI groundout. Wingo tallied his third single of the day
with two outs in the stanza, scoring Grammer from second base for a 9-3
advantage.
In the
sixth, the Falcons picked up two runs with just one away. However, Lyda came in
off a single and rifled the ball to Combs at third, who promptly tagged an Air
Force runner who was attempting to go from first to third. One pitch later,
Wingo fired the ball to Williams who promptly tagged a Falcons' base runner for
the third and final out of the frame.
Air Force
plated a run in the seventh inning and was threatening, but Daniel Hill came in
with two outs and tossed one pitch, getting the much needed final out.
In the
ninth, Daniel Hill squared off against his younger brother, Adam Hill, for the
first time in their lives. The former teammates battled to a full count before
Daniel Hill threw a pitch low, but Adam Hill hit a roller to Bryant, who
touched first for the out. He then got the second batter to ground out to third
before inducing a grounder to short for the third out.
For the
game, PC tallied nine runs on 16 hits while committing one error. Air Force
amassed six runs on eight hits, but had four miscues in the contest.
Harmon,
Wingo and Lyda each accounted for three hits apiece while Bryant and Combs had
two each.
The Blue
Hose return to action tomorrow when they head to nearby Furman for a 6 p.m. contest.
