LYNCHBURG, Va. ? For the second consecutive day,
the Presbyterian College baseball team dropped a hard fought
2-1 decision at Liberty.
The Blue
Hose now stand at 4-17 on the year and 1-9 in Big South Conference play.
Liberty took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when
Doug Bream and Jeff Jefferson scored on Tyler Bream's single up the middle.
However,
head coach Elton Pollock's team got one of the runs back in the fifth stanza.
Gabe Grammer doubled to right field with one away and came home on Mack Hite's
two-out base knock.
PC had
chances to put runs on the board earlier in the game, but was unable to
convert. The Blue Hose had a two on in the first, but the squad did not get
either runner home. In all, Pollock's team left five runners on base in the game.
In the
fourth, Jared Combs doubled to left and moved to third on a passed ball with
only one away. However, Nate Horton and Zac Rhinesmith grounded out to end the
inning without Combs being able to cross home.
Despite a spectacular
effort on the mound, Jesse Harmon ended up taking the loss. Harmon tossed a
complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter at
all while striking out four.
Harmon did
not give up an extra base hit in the game. He now stands at 2-2 on the year.
Mark
Swanson went eight innings to get the victory. Carter Browning worked a
scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Five PC
student-athletes tallied a hit. Hite, Cory Lyda, Combs, Rhinesmith and Grammer
all had a hit. However, four of the five hits went for extra bases. Lyda,
Combs, Rhinesmith and Grammer all hit doubles.
Kenny
Bryant earned the only walk for the squad.
PC scored
one run on five hits without committing an error while the Flames scored two
runs on seven hits.
The teams
conclude their series tomorrow. First pitch is at 1 p.m., as the Blue Hose will look to end
their two game losing streak.
