SPRINGS, N.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team lost a heartbreaker to Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon, 11-10, in the series
finale for both squads.
The Blue Hose fall to 2-8 on the season and are now 0-3 in Big South
Conference play. The Bulldogs are 6-4 on the year and 3-0 against conference
competition.
Tony Micklon's solo home run in the ninth inning tied the
contest at 10 apiece. However, Jon Ahearn's single in the bottom half of the
frame with two outs drove home Matt Sapp for the winning run.
For head coach Elton Pollock's team, Kenny Bryant posted a game-high four hits
in five at bats. Including in his hits was a triple and a double. Micklon had
three hits, all of which went for extra bases. Micklon had two home runs and a
double. Rookie Gabe Grammer had two hits, both of which went over the fence for
a home run.
With one out in the top of the first, Grammer belted a
two-run blast over the right field fence, scoring Mack Hite.
The Blue Hose held a 2-1 lead heading into the third stanza, but the Bulldogs
notched four runs on three hits, including a three-run home run, to take a 5-2
advantage.
Micklon's sacrifice fly in the fourth plated Zac Rhinesmith, making the score
5-3. However, GWU bounced back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the
inning for a 7-3 margin.
With two outs in the fifth, Grammer struck again. This time, he launched a solo
shot, pulling the team within three. Pollock's team knotted the contest at 7-7 in the sixth
after scoring three runs on four hits.
Jared Combs got things going with a single up the middle. Micklon doubled to
right, scoring Combs. Jesse Harmon followed him up with a single to left,
driving in Micklon. After back-to-back sacrifice bunts, Bryant's single pushed
Harmon across home, tying the game.
John Loyd's double scored Daniel Cooke and Brock Miller in
the bottom of the sixth, once again giving the Bulldogs a two-run lead.
The Blue Hose cut the deficit to one in the seventh on Micklon's home run to
left on a 3-2 offering. In the eighth, Bryant tripled down the right field
line, plating Hite, who had led off the inning with a single to center field.
With the score tied at 9-9, Cooke homered to left center field, giving the home
team a 10-9 advantage heading into the ninth frame. That's when Micklon tied
the contest on a homer to left center, making the score 10-10 on an extremely
windy day.
Then, after PC got the first two outs of the inning, Kyle
Fulginiti beat out an infield single before Sapp came in to run for him. After
stealing second, Sapp scored the winning run on Ahearn's single.
The Blue Hose return to action tomorrow at South Carolina. First pitch is
slated for 7 p.m.
