Blue Hose Fall In Series Opener To
Winthrop, 13-4
CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team was unable to overcome a hot start by Winthrop Friday afternoon in the first game
of the three-game series, falling 13-4.
The Blue Hose stand at 5-25 on the season and 1-15 in Big South play. The Eagles improve
to 21-11 on the year and 10-3 against conference competition.
Leading the
way for head coach Elton Pollock's team was Andrew Williams, who had one hit
but accounted for two RBI and two runs scored. Gabe Grammer also had a RBI and
scored while Nate Horton was plated once. Mack Hite also added one RBI.
Senior Cory
Lyda had his 16-game hitting streak snapped as he went 0-4. However, Jared
Combs kept his hitting streak alive, which is now at 13 games, after singling
in the bottom of the ninth.
After
Winthrop got on top 1-0 in its first at bat, the Eagles added
two more runs on three straight doubles, making the score 3-0 after the first
stanza.
A lead-off
triple in the second allowed Winthrop to push across its fourth run of
the day before adding two more in the third.
In the
bottom half of the third, PC was able to get two runs across home plate. After
Nate Horton walked, Grammer tripled him home. Williams then blasted a pitch
over the right center field fence to pull the Blue Hose within three, 6-3. However,
the Eagles would get the three runs back in its next at bat.
Down 9-3,
PC did not have a runner past first base until its eighth at bat of the
contest. By that point, the score was 12-3 after the Eagles tacked on three
runs in the top of the eighth.
The Blue
Hose battled back. With one down, Williams was hit by a pitch. He moved to
second on a grounder and scored on an error by the third baseman to make the
score 12-4.
Winthrop added a run in the top of the ninth
before Combs singled to lead things off in the ninth. The comeback was short
lived though, as Kenny Bryant and Zac Rhinesmith were out before Combs was
thrown out to end the game.
Garrett
Moore went 3.2 innings while taking the loss. He now stands at 0-3 on the
season after giving up eight runs on nine hits.
Daniel
Hill, Jordan Pace, Micah Black and Travis McConnell all saw some time on the
mound in the game.
PC left two
runners on base compared to 11 by Winthrop.
The teams
return to action tomorrow at 11:30 for a doubleheader.
