CLINTON, S.C. ? The
Presbyterian College baseball team lost two games to nearby Winthrop Saturday
afternoon in Big South Conference action. Game scores were 8-4 and 10-9.
The Blue Hose now stand at 5-27 overall and 1-16 in conference play. Winthrop improves to 23-11 on the year and
12-3 against conference competition.
In game
one, Andrew Williams led the charge with four hits in five at bats. Jared
Combs, Zac Rhinesmith and Gabe Grammer also collected two hits apiece.
Williams, Cory Lyda, Combs and Rhinesmith all had one RBI each.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third, head coach Elton Pollock's
team sliced the deficit in half by plating two runs.
Drew Wingo
led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second on Williams'
infield single. Mack Hite safely sacrificed the runners over 90 feet. Lyda then grounded out to second,
plating Wingo. Combs then came through with a base knock that scored Williams
to make the score 4-2.
PC tacked on a run in the fourth when Rhinesmith belted a lead-off shot over
the center field fence. However, Winthrop was able to get out of the inning
without any further damage despite Grammer's one-out triple to left center
field.
The teams
traded runs in the sixth. Down 5-3 in the sixth, Grammer doubled to left
center with one away. Two batters later, Williams singled him home. Despite
pulling ever so close, the Blue Hose were unable to push another run across in
the inning. Then, Winthrop added a run in the eighth to make
the score 6-4.
In the
bottom half of the eighth PC attempted to make a comeback. With two outs,
Williams singled to right. Tony Micklon then walked, putting runners on first
and second. However, Lyda struck out to end the threat.
PC left 12
runners on base in the contest while the visitors left eight.
Jesse
Harmon took the loss despite giving up five runs (four earned) in seven innings
of work. He now stands at 2-4 on the season.
In game
two, it was a back-and-forth affair the whole game. Pollock's squad struck
first. Kenny Bryant led off the second with a solo homer to right. In the
third, Williams sent a solo shot over the right field fence for a 2-0 lead.
Three batters later, Lyda homered to right for a huge 3-0 advantage.
With the
wind blowing out, Winthrop was able to plate four runs in the
fifth, two of which came on a homer.
Down 4-3 in
the bottom of the fifth, Hite tripled to left center. That issued a pitching
change and the Blue Hose took advantage. Lyda sent another home run over the
wall that made the score 6-5.
The squads
traded runs in the sixth while Winthrop added another in the top of the
seventh to make the score 6-6.
In the
bottom half of the stanza, Hite singled with one away. Lyda drew a walk while
both scored on Combs' double to center field. Rhinesmith eventually singled to
right to put PC ahead 9-6.
The Eagles
would go ahead in the eighth after scoring four runs, all of which came on
singles and doubles.
PC left a
runner on base in the eighth and two in the ninth, unable to push anyone across
to knot the game.
Andrew
Foushee went 3.0 innings while being dealt the loss. He gave up four earned
runs in relief of Mitchell Odom. Foushee stands at 1-4 on the year. Odom tossed
six innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits while striking out four.
Each team
left seven on base. For the game, Winthrop had 10 runs on 16 hits while PC
accounted for nine runs on 14 hits.
Lyda and
Rhinesmith each had three hits in the contest while Hite, Combs, Bryant and
Williams each had two.
The Blue
Hose host the Paladins of Furman at 3 p.m., on Wednesday before hitting the
road for Charleston Southern next weekend.
