CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team scored five runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Coastal
Carolina came away with the 14-8 win.
Coastal Carolina plated one run in the first inning,
and PC answered with a run of its own to even the score at 1-1. The Blue Hose
held the Chanticleers in the second inning, earning a double play when Jesse
Harmon caught a fly ball in left field and threw out the Coastal base runner
who got caught taking his time going back to first base.
The score would remain tied for the next
two innings until Coastal came alive in the top of the fourth inning. The
Chanticleers scored seven runs, including a three run home run by Daniel Bowman
and continued with two more runs in the fifth off another homer by Rico Noel.
PC started the fifth inning with runners on
first and second before Gabe Grammer advanced to third on a bunt by Mack Hite.
With a runner in scoring position the Chanticleers made it out of the inning
and kept their 11-1 lead.
The Chanticleers scored one run in the
sixth, but the Blue Hose plated two runs in the bottom of the inning after
Jared Combs started the inning with a lead-off single. Tony Micklon reached
base on a fielder's choice, and Comb advanced to third base on a Coastal
throwing error. After Combs scored, Nate Horton then singled to right field to
bring in Micklon.
With Coastal leading 12-3 in the seventh inning, PC had a strong
inning at the plate, scoring five runs. To start the scoring drive the Blue
Hose loaded the bases and scored one run off a single by Micklon. Hite crossed
the plate off of a sacrifice by Harmon, and then Zac Rhinesmith lined a double
to center field to score two more runs. After cutting Coastal's lead to 12-7,
Grammer's single drove in another run to bring the score to 12-8 before the
Chanticleers closed out the inning.
The visitors tacked on two runs in the eighth for a six-run lead, 14-8. Head
coach Elton Pollock's team tried to battle back in the bottom half of the
stanza, but the team was unable to bring home Cory Lyda, who had doubled to
left with one away.
The Blue Hose had the rally caps on in the ninth. With one down, Zac Rhinesmith
singled to right center. Nate Horton's base knock put runners on first and
second. After Grammer struck out, Rhinesmith and Jeffrey Tatum (who had come in
to pinch run for Horton) scampered into scoring position on a passed ball.
However, Andrew Williams could not extend what hoped to be a big inning as he
struck out on a 3-2 to pitch to end the game.
Combs posted a team-high three hits for PC. He drove in one and scored twice.
Harmon drove in two as did Rhinesmith. Micklon and Hite each scored twice.
Garrett
Moore (0-4) took the loss after pitching four innings and giving up eight runs
on 10 hits. Daniel Hill, Chris Powell and Andrew Foushee all saw time on the
mound for PC.
Polllock's
team scored eight runs on 15 hits but committed four errors. The Chanticleers
tallied 14 runs on 17 hits to go along with three miscues.
The
teams return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m., in the middle game of the
three-game set.
