CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball team had a chance to take
an early lead after loading the bases in the first but failed to do so as the
team eventually lost the contest to No.19 Coastal Carolina 8-3 in the series finale.
The Blue
Hose now stand at 10-31 on the season and 5-18 in Big South Conference play. The
Chanticleers stand at 32-12 overall and 12-5 against conference competition.
PC had a
chance to cause some early destruction but could not convert a one-out bases
loaded situation in the first. With one down, Mack Hite singled. He was
followed up by Cory Lyda, who was hit by a pitch. Jared Combs reached on a
fielding error to fill the bases. However, Kenny Bryant fouled out and Jesse
Harmon struck out to end the threat.
The
Chanticleers jumped on top in the third on a bunt by Rico Noel. Kenny Bryant
fielded the ball, tagging Noel in the process. However, Tucker Frawley was
running on the play, scoring easily for the 1-0 lead.
Ahead 2-0,
the visitors tried to add to their lead. Tyler Bortnick singled to right field
as David Anderson tried to score from second. Gabe Grammer raced toward the
line, gathered the ball and fired a dart toward home plate. Nate Horton took the
ball off one hop, turned to his left, surged and tagged Anderson just prior to him touching the
plate to end the inning and keep the deficit at two.
After
loading the bases in the top of the fifth, Coastal took a 3-0 lead when
Bortnick reached on an error, which would have ended the inning. Mitchell Odom
forced the next batter into a fielder's choice to limit the scoring to just one
in the stanza.
Coastal
went back to work in the seventh, tacking on another run. With runners on
second and third, Rico Noel laced a shot to Combs, who snagged the one hopper
and threw it home. Horton gathered the ball and tagged Frawley out, saving a
run.
With the
score 4-0, Andrew Foushee came in to relieve Daniel Hill. He forced a pop-up in
foul territory to end the inning with the bases loaded. A sacrifice fly in the
seventh put the score at 5-0.
PC struck
in the bottom half of the seventh stanza. With one away, Horton singled. After
moving to second on Grammer's grounder, he came home on Andrew Williams'
single, making the score 5-1.
The Blue
Hose struck again in the eighth. Lyda roped a ground rule double over the right
field fence before eventually coming home on Harmon's RBI single up the middle.
Coastal
thwarted any hopes that PC had of coming back as the visitors plated three
runs, two of which came on a homer, while staking a six-run lead (8-2) heading
into head coach Elton Pollock's team's last at bat.
The Blue
Hose scored a run when Combs reached on an infield single but Bryant's
fielder's choice ended the contest with the bases juiced.
For the
game, the Chanticleers notched eight runs on 16 hits with two miscues. PC
tallied three runs on nine hits, but committed five errors.
The Blue
Hose have a few days off for exams until the team takes on Georgia Tech May 1
at 7 p.m.
