HIGH POINT, N.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball team fell victim to a hot-hitting High Point squad Sunday afternoon by a 10-4 count in Big South Conference action.
Leading the way for PC was Cory Lyda, who accounted for three base hits in four at bats. Mack Hite also had a multi-hit contest, posting two hits in two at bats. Gabe Grammer slammed a solo homer, coming in for Hite.
Jared Combs had a RBI on one hit. Kenny Bryant, Zac Rhinesmith and Nate Horton all accounted for a single hit. Horton also drove in a run and scored once.
Will Freeman suffered the loss, tossing just two innings while giving up five runs on six hits. Mitchell Odom came in, throwing two innings of shutout ball with a strikeout. Micah Black, Chris Powell and Daniel Hill all saw time on the mound in the game.
The Blue Hose jumped on top in the first when Combs' groundout to second plated Hite, who had earlier singled to center field.
High Point quickly countered, taking the lead in the bottom of the first with two runs. The Panthers crossed home three more times over the next two stanzas, taking a 5-1 lead into the fourth.
PC had a chance to slice into the lead in the second, but Harmon was gunned out at home, leaving two stranded.
High Point widened its lead to 9-1 in the sixth when the squad posted four more runs, two of which came on a single.
The bats came alive for the Blue Hose in the seventh when Horton scored an unearned run when Andrew Williams reached on an error by the first baseman. Williams grounder would have been the third out of the frame.
In the eighth, Grammer led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field fence, pulling the team within seven, 10-3.
With one away, Bryant's walk pushed Combs to second, forcing a pitching change. Rhinesmith walked to load the bases. Horton grounded out to the pitcher, but Combs crossed home to make the score 10-4.
The Blue Hose will step out of conference for a doubleheader Tuesday at Furman. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
