PC Keeps Bulldogs On Leash In 10-7 Win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball team recorded a 10-7 victory over UNC Asheville Friday afternoon in a Big South Conference contest.

The Blue Hose improve to 12-38 on the season and 6-19 against conference teams. The Bulldogs fall to 9-41 overall and 5-
20 in league play.

Nate Horton led the way with his three-for five effort while driving in three runs. He also scored twice. Kenny Bryant was three-for-five with a run scored. Mack Hite, Tony Micklon and Andrew Williams all posted two hits. Williams and Cory Lyda each drove home one.

Williams, Hite, Jared Combs, Jeffrey Tatum and Zac Rhinesmith all scored once apiece.

After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, Horton tied the game in PC's second at bat with a solo blast over the right field fence.

Head coach Elton Pollock's team added two runs in the third inning for a 3-1 lead. With two down, Williams singled and scored on Hite's single and a fielding error by the right fielder. Lyda then drove home Williams for the two-run advantage.

The Bulldogs pulled within one after three only to see PC tack on two more runs, staking a 5-2 lead after four.

In the fourth, Micklon doubled to left with one out. He moved to third on Bryant's single. Rhinesmith drew a walk to load the bases for Gabe Grammer. Grammer singled back up the middle, driving in two.

Asheville would not go away, scoring a run in its half of the fourth. Neither team could cross home in the fifth, but the PC bats came alive in the last four innings, scoring in three of the frames.

Micklon walked and moved to second on Rhinesmith's base knock in the sixth. Micklon then scored on Grammer's fielder's choice. Rhinesmith scored on Williams' sacrifice fly for a 7-3 advantage.

The Blue hose added two in the eighth. Once again, Micklon laced a two-run homer down the right field line, which scored Combs who had reached on a walk.

The home team added a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to make the score 9-7. Pollock's bunch would counter in its last at bat, pushing the lead to three at 10-7.

Horton led off the stanza with a single through the right side. Tatum pinch ran for him and promptly moved to second when Jesse Harmon walked. Bryant put down a terrific bunt single to load the bases. Tatum then scored on a wild pitch for the three-run margin.

Harmon got the win for PC after working 7.1 innings. He moves to 4-5 on the season after giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits. He also walked two and struck out four. Grammer pitched the last 1.2 innings giving up a mere hit for his second save.

The teams return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. It marks the 2009 season finale for the Blue Hose.
