CLINTON, S.C. - Cara Caruso's victory at No. 5 essentially clinched the
Presbyterian College women's tennis victory over Liberty Saturday afternoon by
a 4-3 score.
The Blue Hose now stand at 3-9 on the year and 1-1 in Big South Conference
play. The win marks more wins for the squad this year than in 2009.
PC started out by winning the doubles point. After top-seeded Heather Heusel
and Paige Oelke lost an 8-2 decision to Jordan Jenkins and Solomon Burgess,
Olivia McMillan and Virginia Waldron evened the fight for the point by downing
Carol Lobel and Brittany Thomas 9-7 at No. 2.
Thanks in part to the Flames only having five student-athletes available to
play, Megan Davis and Daryl Thompson were credited with the default win.
In singles play, Jenkins was able to get the best of Heusel by a 6-0, 6-1 score
at the No. 1 slot. McMillan lost a hard-fought match to Solomon Burgess 6-1,
7-5 at No. 2.
Lobel was able to pull off a three-set win over Davis at No. 3. The scores were
6-4, 3-6, 10-4.
Despite trailing 3-1, PC continued to battle. Oelke was able to even her mark
on the day with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of fourth-seeded Fabiana Gouveia. Caruso then
came through with what turned out to be the match clincher as she downed
Brittany Thomas 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5. With a default win at No. 6, which gave
Daryl Thompson the win, PC snagged a 4-3 victory, marking the first league win
in the school's history.
"It was a good win," head coach Patric Hynes said. "We have been playing well
overall and the team has been working hard. Cara's win was a big breakthrough
for her as she clinched the match for us. We won all the big points when the
match was on the line."
The PC women's tennis team's Big South Conference match against UNC
Asheville on Sunday at Crowne Center Tennis Plaza has been postponed due to
rain in the Asheville area. The match has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 1
p.m.
