Down 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Hose loaded the bases with the chance to win, but could only get one run across home as the Eastern Michigan Eagles baseball team held on for the 6-4 victory over Presbyterian College this afternoon in front of 135 fans at the PC Baseball Complex in Clinton, S.C.
Eastern Michigan improved to 5-4, while PC dropped its fifth in a row to go to 4-5.
The bottom of the ninth inning started with an EMU error to put Tony Micklon (Sumter, S.C.) on base. He advanced to second off a base hit from Mack Hite (Abbeville, S.C.) and took third when Nate Horton (Spartanburg, S.C.) walked. The next two batters went down in order before Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) singled to left to bring in Micklon. The next PC batter grounded out to second to end the threat and the game as EMU took the 6-4 win.
The Blue Hose led 3-2 early in the game with two in the first inning and a run, off a solo home run by Micklon, in the second. The Eagles plated two runs in the second when Kyle Peterson sent a two-run home run over the left field wall.
Eastern Michigan took the lead with two runs in the fourth and added to it with one in the sixth and seventh innings.
Nathan Chong (Duluth, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with a two-for-four effort and one RBI. Grammer was one-for-five with two RBI.
Peterson went two-for-four with three RBI to lead Eastern Michigan.
Joe Battistelli threw 1.1 innings to pick up the save, while Jordan Glover went 7.1 innings to earn the win. Steven Richardson pitched 7.2 innings and gave up six runs (four earned) in the loss.
