LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
grabbed a two-run lead in the seventh inning in its series opener against
Liberty on Friday night but couldn't hold the advantage as the Blue Hose
dropped the game, 6-5.
PC moves to 18-17 overall and 4-9 in the Big South. Liberty
improves to 18-16 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) led the team with three runs
batted in. John Wagner (Olney, Md.) added an RBI and two runs and Tyler Hill
(Goose Creek, S.C.) chipped in with a two hits and a pair of runs.
Buck Mosteller (Woodruff, S.C.) took his third loss of the campaign as his
record moves to 4-3. Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) relieved Mosteller in a
solid outing, allowing only one hit in an inning and one-third of work.
Dane Beakler earned the win for Liberty after going
two-thirds of an inning in the seventh.
Liberty built a 3-0 lead in the first inning, stealing three
bases in the inning after a hit batter and a walk to set up a two-RBI triple. A
sacrifice fly brought home the third run as the Flames grabbed their early
advantage.
The Blue Hose brought the game back to even thanks to one
swing of Zebedis' bat. Hill singled and Wagner followed by drawing a walk and
moving Hill to second. Staring at two outs, Mack Hite (Abbeville, S.C.) churned out an infield single
that loaded the bases for Zebedis. The freshman then brought everyone home with
a double to left center that tied the game, 3-3.
After three scoreless innings, PC broke the tie in the
seventh only to see the Flames take back the lead in the bottom of the inning.
The team again turned to Hill and Wagner and duo came through with a pair of
runs.
Two outs gone, Hill beat out an infield single to reach
first. Wagner then sent a ball deep to plate Hill and give himself a triple,
followed by taking advantage of a throwing miscue by Matt Williams and scoring.
The Blue Hose led after the play, 5-3.
The Flames turned three doubles and a single into three runs
in the bottom of the seventh to gain a 6-5 lead that they would hold to win the
contest.
The second game of the series, originally scheduled for
tomorrow, has been rescheduled for Sunday as part of a doubleheader that will
begin at 1 p.m.
