CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College baseball team
posted eight hits and took a lead in the first inning of its series opener
against Coastal Carolina, but the Blue Hose fell behind to eventually drop the
contest, 7-1.
PC moves to 18-13 and 4-6 in the Big South Conference, while
Coastal Carolina improves to 19-11 and 5-2 in league action.
Andrew Williams (Augusta, Ga.) collected two hits in the
game en route to extending his hitting streak to 11 straight games, the longest
such run of any member of the Blue Hose this season. Williams also scored PC's
lone run.
Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) picked up a hit to extend his
streak to nine games, one short of his longest of the year.
The Blue Hose struck in the first inning to grab an early
1-0 lead. After dispatching the Chanticleers with a 1-2-3 first, Williams
looped the second pitch from starter Anthony Meo into centerfield for a leadoff
single. Mack Hite (Abbeville, S.C.) took a four-pitch walk to first and both
advanced a base on a passed ball before Zebedis walked to load the bases full
of Blue Hose.
Kenny Bryant (Goose Creek, S.C.) put a ball in play to score
Williams and give PC a 1-0 lead, but the Chanticleers turned two in the
process and eventually ended the inning with no further damage.
Coastal packed its scoring into three innings but Meo scattered
seven PC hits over eight and one-thirds innings as the Blue Hose could not post
a run after its initial score. A four-run third inning, a solo unearned run in
the fourth and two more in the ninth for Coastal sealed the result.
PC offered some impressive plays in the field to help out
starter Buck Mosteller (Woodruff, S.C.), who saw his season record move to 3-3.
With on Chanticleer on in the second inning and one away, third
baseman Tyler Hill (Goose Creek, S.C.) made a leaping grab on a line drive
before throwing across the diamond to double up Coastal for an inning-ending
double play.
Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) also made a diving catch in
centerfield to take away a hit.
The Blue Hose return to the PC Baseball Complex on Saturday
for game number two at 2 p.m.
