PC Baseball Comes Up Short In Series Opener at Charleston Southern

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team put up eight runs in its Friday afternoon contest against Charleston Southern, but could not hold on as the Blue Hose fell by an 18-9 margin.

PC moves to 20-30 on the year and 5-17 in the Big South. Charleston Southern improves to 26-24 and 13-9 in league play.

Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) hit his 11th home run of the season in the eighth inning, sending a moon shot over the left field wall for his 48th RBI of the year.

Five different PC players drove in one run and four different players notched two hits on the day.

Andrew Williams (Augusta, Ga.) picked up two assists in the game, tying him for the fifth-best season in that category in the modern era (since 1988). His 143 assists in 2011 ties Jamie Carter's 143 assists in 2000.

Starter Jordan Pace (Charleston, S.C.) took the loss to move to 2-8 on the year.

Stew Brase earned the win for Charleston Southern, improving to 5-6. Leftfielder Matt Still led the Buccaneers with three hits and four RBI.

Four runs from the Blue Hose gave the visiting side a quick advantage. PC went to work early, loading the bases for Nate Horton (Spartanburg, S.C.) in the top of the first thanks to two hit batsmen and a Mack Hite (Abbeville, S.C.) single. Horton sent a high chopper to the shortstop that allowed Hite to score for the game's first run, 1-0.

The offense kept rolling as Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) poked an infield single to second base that plated Zebedis and Tony Micklon (Sumter, S.C.), with the rightfielder Micklon beating the tag at home to put the Blue Hose ahead, 3-0. Tyler Hill (Goose Creek, S.C.) picked up the next run, singling up the middle to score Grammer from second and extend the lead to 4-0.

Charleston Southern answered quickly in the bottom of the inning, posting six hits to score five runs and bring righthander Chad White (Suwanee, Ga.) into the ballgame. White ended the inning with no further scoring as the Blue Hose trailed after one, 5-4.

The Buccaneers added another run in the third after a walk, a double and an error scored an unearned run for Charleston Southern.

PC responded in the fourth. John Wagner (Olney, Md.) knocked a double to centerfield and came around to score after a Hite single to pull within one, 6-5.

A sacrifice fly from Charleston Southern in the fourth restored the Bucs' lead to two, 7-5. Two more runs in the bottom of the fifth gave CSU a 9-5 lead.

The Blue Hose cut into the Buccaneers lead in the top of the sixth, however, scoring twice on timely hitting and CSU mistakes. Williams led off with a double to right center and scored on an error that sent Hite to second. A Zebedis flyout gave Hite enough time to reach third and a Micklon groundout brought the senior home. PC trailed by two after the scores, 9-7.

Charleston Southern found one run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to extend its lead to 12-7 before Zebedis' homer in the eighth made the score 12-8.

Six CSU runs in the eighth brought the score to 18-8 before Williams scored on throwing error in the top of the ninth to plate PC's ninth run. The Blue Hose could not pull closer as the game ended with PC behind, 18-9.

The two teams meet again tomorrow for the second game of the series at 2 p.m.
