CLINTON, S.C. – The
Presbyterian College baseball team grabbed an early lead in its Friday matchup
against Winthrop, but couldn't hold off the Winthrop offense as the Eagles took
the win by a 15-1 margin.
PC falls to 19-27 overall
and 4-15 in Big South Conference play while Winthrop improves to 22-25 and 10-9
in league action.
Jordan Pace (Charleston,
S.C.) allowed one earned run but received the loss to move to 2-7 on the year.
Winthrop's Tyler Mizenko improves to 4-2 with the win.
Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill,
S.C.) tallied PC's lone run batted in and Mack Hite (Abbeville, S.C.) scored
the run for the Blue Hose.
Five different PC players
registered hits on the day.
Eddie Rohan led Winthrop
with three RBI and T.J. Olesczuk tallied a game-high three hits.
PC went to work early by
taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hite posted the game's first hit,
lifting a double down the left field line and coming around to score when
Zebedis lined a 3-2 pitch to left field for his team-leading 46th RBI of the
year.
Winthrop answered in the
top of the third, recording four hits and taking advantage of two PC errors to
score four runs and erase the Blue Hose lead.
The Eagles found another
four runs in the fourth inning on three hits and an error to lead, 8-1.
A three-run home run from
Justin Hopper helped the Eagles to six runs in the seventh as they extended
their lead to 14-1.
Winthrop would score once
more in the eighth to take the score to its final result, 15-1.
PC returns on Saturday at
2 p.m. for the second game of the series. The Blue Hose will honor their six
seniors in a ceremony at 1:45 p.m. before the first pitch.
