CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College baseball team (0-4) travels to Mercer (5-1) for its second three-game series of the year. PC will look for its first win after dropping a 7-5 road contest to Furman on Tuesday night. The Blue Hose will also aim to avoid their first 0-5 start since 2009 when the team played its first 12 games on the road.
Saturday's game has been moved to 1 p.m. from its originally scheduled time of 4 p.m.
PC will take on the Bears for the first time in its Division I history and the first time since 1963. The only win for the Blue Hose came in 1963 and the squad trails in the all time series, 1-8. PC dropped the first six games before taking a win on March 26, 1963, by a 3-1 margin.
The Blue Hose will rely on a trio of sophomores this weekend, handing the ball to Bud Jeter on Friday, Chandler Knox on Saturday and Chad Sanders on Sunday. Jeter and Knox took the mound against then-No. 11 Georgia last weekend, with Jeter going five and one-third innings (12 hits, six runs) and taking the loss on Friday before Knox went five and one-third the next day (five hits, three runs) and did not receive a decision. Sanders will make his first career start on Sunday in the series finale.
Mercer enters Friday with a 5-1 record after knocking off Florida A&M on Wednesday night in seven innings, 19-1. The Bears took their season-opening series from Morehead State, splitting a Friday doubleheader before winning on Saturday, 2-1. Mercer went 39-20 in 2011, finishing as runner-up at the Atlantic Sun Championship tournament.
The Blue Hose will play at defending back-to-back national champion South Carolina on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before opening their home schedule on Wednesday against Wofford at 2 p.m.
