SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
earned its first win of the season in style on Saturday, routing Savannah State
on the road, 17-3.
PC improves to 1-2 and will look to even its record Sunday in the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Savannah State moves to 2-1.
The Blue Hose pounded out 17 hits and 14 RBI in the effort.
Nathan Chong (Duluth, Ga.) went 3-for-4 with four runs and 2 RBI while hitting his first home run of the year. Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) also went
yard in a 2-for-4 effort. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) went three-for-five on
the day as well.
Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) enjoyed a career day on Saturday.
The junior threw his first-ever complete game, striking out a career-high nine
batters without allowing a single walk. Jeter scattered six hits through nine innings and moves to 1-0 on the year.
The Blue Hose scored two runs in the first inning and four
in the second. Chong led off the game with a solo shot to left field and
Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) later drove in Paul on a single to right
field.
PC turned four hits into four runs in the second inning. An
error brought Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.)
home for the freshmen's first career runs to put PC up, 4-0. An Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) single
then brought around Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) before a Paul single
scored Chong as PC led, 6-0.
Savannah State cut the lead in half by scoring three in the
third and would stand as the only runs the Tigers would score. PC took all
three back in the top of the sixth inning. A Chong double put PC on the board
before a Zebedis dinger to left field scored a pair of runs. PC headed into the seventh
with a 9-3 advantage thanks to two strikeouts from Jeter in a one-two-three
bottom half of the sixth, who repeated the feat in the seventh.
A scoreless seventh gave way to a six-run eighth inning and
a two-run ninth. Paul collected another RBI and freshman Weston Jackson (Greer,
S.C.) drove in his first run with a sacrifice fly to left. Robby Swab
(Kernersville, N.C.) then broke through with a three-run triple and a Savannah
State error gave PC one more run.
The Blue Hose capped the outing by scoring a pair of runs in
the ninth, both coming from the bat of freshman Michael Trebendis
(Fayetteville, Ga.). The newcomer picked up his first collegiate hit and RBI in
his first collegiate at-bat, one of 10 different Blue Hose to hit safely on the
day.
Jeter earned one more strikeout before the final out. The
junior forced 11 groundouts in the victory.
