CLINTON, S.C. – Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) pitched a
complete game to lift the Presbyterian College baseball team to a Big South Conference
win over High Point in PC's home opener on Friday, 7-2.
PC improves to 6-4 on the year and 1-0 in the Big South,
picking up its fifth straight win. High Point falls to 5-4 and 0-1 in the Big South.
The two sides meet in the second game of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Dees delivered a stellar performance in throwing his first
complete game. The sophomore lefthander allowed only three hits and two runs—none
of them earned—while striking out five and walking three. Dees moves to 2-1 on
the season.
Three Blue Hose went 2-for-4 on the day as Brad Zebedis
(Rock Hill, S.C.), Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Nathan Chong (Duluth,
Ga.) tagged the Panthers for two hits apiece. Chong hit his second home run of
the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning.
High Point got on the board first to the tune of two runs in
the fourth. A PC error—the only one of the day—put the leadoff man on. Two
walks later, the Panthers scored an unearned run on a single before a sacrifice
fly gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hose answered in the bottom of the frame and added
another for good measure. Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) led off with a
single and came home on an ensuing Zebedis double. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.)
ran his hitting streak to 10 games with a single that scored Zebedis and tied
the game at 2-2.
With the bases clear after a double play, Chong cranked a
pitch over the left field wall to give PC the only lead it needed on the day,
3-2.
PC added a pair of runs in the sixth. Zebedis began the run
by singling to right center before a two-out base knock from Preston scored the
firstbases. High Point brought in a new arm but a passed ball and a throwing error
allowed Preston to come in and PC led, 5-2.
Dees continued to deal on the mound, going 1-2-3- in the
seventh and allowed one hit in the eight.
Three Blue Hose runs in the eighth rounded out the offense
for both teams. Both came from the bat of freshman Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill,
Ga.), whose two-out double scored Preston and Paul.
Dees slammed the door in the ninth, retiring the side in
order to seal the win.
