CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team fell in a Big South Conference match on Sunday to the Liberty Flames, 6-1.
PC moves to 8-12-1 and 0-6 in the Big South. The Blue Hose next host Newberry on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Liberty improves to 10-8 overall, 5-2 in the Big South and plays at Radford on Wednesday.
Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) won at the second flight in a 5-7, 6-3, 10-1 result over Belen Rivera. The win gave the senior her team-leading 12th of the season.
Liberty took the doubles point with three wins. At No. 3, Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Caroline Ferrari (Rome, Ga.) nearly took a match from Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong but fell, 8-6. Liberty's Maria Khval and Rebekah Jenkins won at No. 1 over Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) and Courtney Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.), 8-3, while Alves and Kayla Stanford (Canton, Ga.) fell to Brittany Yang and Rivera, 8-2.
In singles play, Ransom battled Yang in a tough No. 1 battle before the Flame squeezed past in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. At the third flight, Jenkins won over Ferrari, 6-2, 6-0, and Khval won at No. 4 over Gardiner, 6-1, 6-1. Mariely Hassey took a fifth-flight match from deLoach, 6-1, 6-3, and Lauren Mabe rounded out singles action with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) at No. 6.
