BOONE, N.C.- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team suffered a 5-0 setback to Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hose drop to 5-2 overall as they open Big South Conference play on Wednesday at Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m. The Mountaineers improve to 3-3 on the year with a match Sunday, Feb. 15, against West Virginia State.
Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure bested PC's No. 1 doubles team of Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) and Demi Henschel (Alberta, Canada), 8-2. Brittany Nuttall (Atlanta, Ga.) and Claire-Mitchell Andrews (Tampa, Fla.) were beaten 8-3 at flight 2 by Megan Mullen and Melissa Machado. Sara McBride (Travelers Rest, S.C.) and Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) played in a third flight match that was unfinished.
In singles action, Ransom was defeated by Cox at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-2 and LaSure knocked off Nuttall at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1. Henschel was beaten by Brianna Armellino in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 singles position and deLoach dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match at No. 5 singles.
McBride and Andrews had unfinished matches due to inclement weather on the way.
