FARMVILLE, VA.- The Presbyterian College women's tennis squad earned a Big South Conference win Saturday afternoon with the 4-3 comeback win over Longwood at the Lancer Courts.
PC's victory over the Longwood marks the first conference win for the team since the 4-3 victory against UNC Asheville on April 12, 2012 during head coach Catherine Dunagan's first season. PC improves to 12-5 overall and 1-3 in Big South competition. Longwood falls to 8-12 on the year on the team's Senior Day.
In doubles, PC earned the point after taking the top two flights from the Lancers. Sara McBride (Travelers Rest, S.C.) and Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) won their first match ever competed at No. 1 doubles with their 8-3 win over Malin Allgurin and Paloma Alatorre. McBride and deLoach are now 8-1 as a duo on the year. Claire-Mitchell Andrews (Tampa, Fla.) and Brittany Nuttall (Atlanta, Ga.) got an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Anna Pelak and Nicole Parker, while Mason Thomas and Maria Coronel earned an 8-2 win against Madison Utberg (Roswell, Ga.) and Antonia Conze (Willich, Germany) at flight 3.
In singles, Nuttall lost to Allgurin 6-0, 6-1 at line one, Conze dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Parker at line six, and Utberg fell to Thomas 6-2, 6-1 at line five to give the Lancers a strong 3-1 lead.
The Blue Hose clawed back, though, earning well-fought wins at lines two, three, and four.
Andrews battled with Pelak for a 6-1, 6-7 (4-6), 6-3 win at No. 2 singles for PC's highest finish of the day.
deLoach fought back for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Coronel at line 3 to improve to 13-4 on the year.
With it tied up 3-3, McBride decided the match with her comeback win at No. 4 singles against Alatorre, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.
