ASHEVILLE, N.C.- Gardner-Webb won the doubles point and swept the top three flights of singles to earn the 4-0 clinch over the Presbyterian College women's tennis team in the first round of the Big South Conference Championship at the Asheville Racquet Club indoor courts.
PC ends the season with a 12-11 overall record for the team's first winning record in the Division I era. Gardner-Webb improves to 9-11 and will play No. 1 seeded Charleston Southern tomorrow in the next round.
In doubles competition, the Runnin' Bulldogs earned wins at flights one and two to get the point as Rokia Sacko and Teodora Stanciu defeated Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Sara McBride (Travelers Rest, S.C.) 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Stina Magnusson and Mary Walker Mixon beat Claire-Mitchell Andrews (Tampa, Fla.) and Brittany Nuttall (Atlanta, Ga.) 8-1 at No. 2.
Demi Henschel (Alberta, Canada) and Antonia Conze (Willich, Germany) were up 7-5 on Sarah Rieckmann and Catherine White at flight three but the match was discontinued at the conclusion of the other two matches.
In singles, Yasmin Doost handed Nuttall a 6-0, 6-4 loss at line one, Sacko beat Henschel 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Magnusson defeated Andrews 6-1, 6-2 at line three to take the top three matches and clinch the match.
deLoach ends her career with 48 singles wins which is a career-high in the PC record books. The senior also compiled 15 wins this season, which is also a single-season win record for the team. The team will also bid goodbye to senior Greer Ransom, who finishes her career at PC with 24 career wins to tie her for third in the PC Division I era.
