HIGH POINT, N.C. – Presbyterian College baseball dropped the opening game of its Big South Conference weekend series at High Point on Friday at Williard Stadium, 5-1.
PC (22-16, 4-9 Big South) and High Point (18-18, 7-6 Big South) will play a doubleheader that begins tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final two games of the series. The threat of inclement weather forced the sides to reschedule Sunday's game.
High Point scored two runs in the second inning and three in the third en route to the victory. The Blue Hose outhit the Panthers 9-7, moving to 19-4 on the year when PC records more hits than its opponent.
David Sauer (4-4) took the loss. Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.) impressed in relief, allowing only one hit in 5.1 innings. Hayes shut out the Panthers after the third while fanning five and issuing no walks.
PC scored in the fifth inning but left the bases loaded after pushing a run across. Ryan Hedrick (High Point, N.C.) reached on an error and advanced to third base on another error and a TJ Richardson (Sugar Hill, Ga.) bunt single. Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) hit a sac fly to bring the freshman infielder home, cutting into the Panthers lead, 5-1. Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.) singled to keep the bases loaded, but PC could not convert.
The Blue Hose put a runner in scoring position in the eighth and ninth as well.
Motroni and Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) each posted a pair of hits. Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) extended his reached base streak to 21 consecutive games.
High Point jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI groundouts from Clare and Fortier-Bens. The Panthers added to their lead in the third, suing a fielder's choice and two-run single from McDermott.
