Baseball Continues Road Swing at Gardner-Webb

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team gets set for a it's final road Big South series of the season beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. when the Blue Hose head to Gardner-Webb for a three-game weekend set. Saturday's first pitch is set for 4 p.m. with the series finale at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. All three games will be shown on ESPN+ from Boiling Springs.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team could not overcome an eight-run fourth from the host Wofford as the Terriers recorded a 21-2 victory on Wednesday night at Russell C. King Field.
 
Series History
• Gardner-Webb sits with a 27-15 all-time record over the Blue Hose in PC's DI era.
• PC split the four meetings in 2021 with one of those wins coming in the Big South Championship.
• In last year's four meetings, Kyle Decker led the offense with a .417 average (5-of-12) with three runs scored. Brody Fahr added a .333 average.
Duncan Howard tossed five innings in his lone start against the Runnin' Bulldogs with five strikeouts allowing one earned run en route to the victory.
 
Blue Hose Record Chasers
• With each guys next win, sophomores Duncan Howard and Charlie McDaniel with become the single-season DI record holder for wins with eight in a season.
• With his next save, senior Eric Toth will become the DI career record holder for saves with 13 in his time at Presbyterian.
Jay Wetherington needs three stolen bases to tie for second in the single-season DI record book for steals. Wetherington currently has 16 entering the weekend. Kyle Decker and Eric Toth both sit right behind Wetherington with 15 steals.
 
Last Five Games & 10 Games
Eric Toth is pacing the Blue Hose over their last 10 games with a .417 average as he's scored 10 runs with 15 hits.
Tanner Smith has tossed five scoreless innings in his last three outings with seven strikeouts.
Duncan Howard has limited opponents to one earned run over his last three outings with a 1-0 record.
Dalton Reeves and Ryan Ouzts each have a pair of homers in the last 10 contests to lead the way for the Blue Hose.
 
Blue Hose in the Ranks
Eric Toth ranks second in the conference with a .359 average as he paces the conference with 66 hits and is tied for third in runs with 51 scored.
Dalton Reeves is tied for fourth with 14 doubles as Jack Gorman ranks in a tie for sixth with 13 on the year.
Jay Wetherington is tied for fifth in the league with 16 steals, while Toth and Kyle Decker are tied for 15 with 15 stolen bases.
Duncan Howard and Charlie McDaniel each are tied for second in the conference with seven wins apiece. Howard is sixth with 61 strikeouts as McDaniel is seventh in the league with 58 of his own strikeouts.
 
Scouting Gardner-Webb
• Gardner-Webb enters the weekend with a 17-32 record following a midweek defeat against North Carolina.
• Alec Burns leads the Runnin' Bulldogs with a .307 average which includes seven doubles and eight homers. Curtis Robison has a team-high 15 doubles and also has tallied a team best 21 stolen bases along with Jacob Marcos has 21 steals as well.
• Huntley Hacker has allowed just two earned runs over 10.1 innings to lead the bullpen for Gardner-Webb.
• Joe Simeone is 7-5 with a 3.67 ERA over 81 innings he's tallied 89 strikeouts. Simeone has also recorded three complete games and a shutout.
 
Howard Earns Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week Honors
• Following his seventh win of the season with seven shutout innings on Saturday afternoon, Presbyterian College baseball sophomore right-handed pitcher Duncan Howard (Kernersville, N.C.) has been named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week for April 25-May 1, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• Howard continued his dominance in 2022 tossing seven shutout innings in a 3-1 win over James Madison on Saturday afternoon. He scattered six hits and allowed a pair of walks with four strikeouts en route to his seventh win of the 2022 season.
• He also added a scoreless inning of relief in midweek action against Western Carolina on Wednesday night that saw the Blue Hose sophomore earn his first save of the season. The Blue Hose Saturday starter hasn't allowed an earned run over his last 15.2 innings of work which goes back over his last four appearances which he has totaled 15 strikeouts in those outings.
 
Dearman Earns Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week Honors
• Following his two scoreless innings of relief on Thursday night, Presbyterian College baseball senior left-handed pitcher Clark Dearman (Milton, Ga.) has been named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played April 12-17, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• In his lone appearance, Dearman entered in the eighth inning on Thursday night of the Blue Hose 7-5 win over Longwood. He struck out the side in the eighth before adding a punchout in the ninth en route to the Blue Hose series opening win. He needed just 26 pitches over six batters to record his third save of the 2022 season.
• He is third on the team with 13 appearances as he leads all Blue Hose relievers with a 3.63 ERA and is second on the team with three saves.
• This is the fourth Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for Presbyterian and third in a row as Logan Ymker won the award the past two weeks. Dearman also picked up an award earlier this season.
 
Ymker Earns Second Straight Relief Pitcher of the Week Award
• Junior Logan Ymker (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has been named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week for games played April 4-10, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• Ymker opened the weekend at Morehead State tossing the final two innings of the Blue Hose 11-7 win over the Eagles. He sat down the first five batters he faced on Saturday before a two-out single was his lone blemish. Ymker struck out a season-high five batters to help finish off Saturday's win for the Blue Hose. He pitched in Sunday's series finale at Morehead State recording the final two outs which included his sixth strikeout of the weekend.
• Over his last six appearances, Ymker has allowed two earned runs over 9.2 innings allowing just one walk and totaling 16 strikeouts. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native is limiting batters to .147 opponents batting average as he has recorded a 1.86 earned run average in that stretch.
• Ymker is the first Big South reliever since May of 2019 to win back-to-back weekly awards when Winthrop's Colten Rendon won three straight at the end of the 2019 season.
 
Toth Named Big South Player of the Week
• Following a 7-for-13 week at the plate, Presbyterian College baseball senior Eric Toth (Mobile, Ala.) has been named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 28-Mar.6, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• He began his week with a 2-for-4 performance in a midweek defeat against Charleston. Toth opened the weekend against Bellarmine with a season-high three hits including a double and run driven in during the Blue Hose 9-3 win over Bellarmine.
• The senior continued his strong week at the plate with his second homer of the season on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout before adding an RBI double and scoring two runs in Presbyterian's 8-4 series finale win over the Knights.
• Over the four-game week, Toth slugged .923 and got on base at a .611 clip as he was able to raise his batting average from .290 up to .364.
 
Blue Hose in the Minors
• Former Blue Hose pitcher Hayden Deal has begun his 2022 with a 1-0 record tossing 18.2 innings over eight appearances allowing just two earned runs with 19 strikeouts for the Mississippi Braves, the AA Affiliate of the defending champion Atlanta Braves.
• As he begins his fifth year in pro baseball in 2022, Deal is 21-15 with a 3.00 ERA as over 335.2 innings pitched he has racked up 299 strikeouts. He also added five saves in his minor league career.
