EMORY, Va. – The sixth-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team powered through another tournament where the W's came in bunches on Friday afternoon, winning four individual championships at the Wasp Open (hosted by Emory & Henry) and spreading out 51 victories from 18 competitors.
Chiara Barbieri (103),
Alyssa Mahan (124),
May Cuyler (160), and
Ella Beam (207) won all 13 matches between themselves, helping the Blue Hose reach a grand total of 16 first-place showings in only three tournaments this year.
At the end of the near-nine hour tournament in Virginia, PC had amassed 10 technical falls and an impressive 28 victories via pin.
Since opening the campaign inside the NWCA's top five and touting six nationally-ranked wrestlers currently, the Blue Hose have tallied 32 top-three placements when wrestling in a tournament setting.
Friday served as a solid tune-up for the famed Midlands Championships later this month, a bracket in Chicago that will house a PC crew that continues to build up an astounding reputation in multi-team events.
NOTABLES
- By earning three consecutive technical's that combined for a score of 33-2, Barbieri cruised to her third tournament championship at Presbyterian and her second in the past month.
- Cuyler's path to the 160-lb. crown was equally impressive, pinning each of her four opponents to improve her freshman record to 12-1. She has yet to lose when participating in an invitational, grabbing three falls on Friday in under 90 seconds.
- Ranked ninth in class 207 and fresh off a dual win against third-ranked King just 72 hours ago, Beam pinned back-to-back combatants to reach the title bout where she then grinded a 5-1 decision, her fourth championship while under the Blue Hose umbrella.
- Mahan (polled at number six in the nation for class 124), snatched two rapid pins that totaled just 95 seconds on her way to another 1
st-place medal.
- Junior
Paige Wehrmeister's comeback bid continues to inspire after missing most of last season due to injury, lining up three falls and a technical to eventually seize silver in class 145.
- Four other PC athletes placed third for head coach
Brian Vutianitis during their busy day.
Annalise Maralit,
Charlee Shuler,
Kascidy Garren, and
Maria Aiono formed that bronze quartet, having their hand raised a combined 13 times.
