Presby Puts on a Show in New York with Three Wins over Top-20 Opponents

ALBANY, N.Y. – Plucking the victory away from #15 Sacred Heart, #19 Elmira, and #12 Lock Haven all within the span of three hours, the sixth-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team earned second-place at the NYS Journeymen Duals on Saturday afternoon.

Bumping up their win count to 13 (and with seven of those W's over nationally-ranked challengers), the only so-called "blemish" on PC's weekend was a narrow defeat at the hands of #1 Iowa.

Other than that slight setback, the Scotsmen can hang their heads high after assembling 99 combined points in the three previous duals where they bested SHU 33-15, Elmira 40-7, and LHU 26-17.

After starting off the month of January with a 5th-place mark at the NWCA National Duals in the Midwest, Presbyterian continues their upward trajectory with another solid showing at a neutral site.

Head coach Brian Vutianitis has guided his program to 11 dual wins against teams positioned inside the national top 20 since November 2023.

NOTABLES

- Presby's first bout of the day came over a foe they had already beaten just two weeks earlier by a 32-12 cushion in Cedar Falls. In round two, however, Sacred Heart came out swinging with a quick 10-4 advantage.

- The Blue Hose countered with a 25-0 run that spanned nearly the rest of the dual, allowing a comfortable margin thanks to three pins in that period.

- PC's second encounter was drastically less dramatic, leading Elmira from wire to wire en route to a 33-point boat-race.

- By finishing that meeting with exactly 40 points, the Blue Hose scored their highest number in a single dual since December of 2023 (a 47-0 landslide over Huntingdon in Clinton.)

- Although Lock Haven didn't go down quietly in match number three with a small flurry near the conclusion, Presbyterian had crafted a worry-free lead of 24-7 to ultimately grind out a nine-point final difference.

- While unable to pull off the win against the number one team in the NWCA poll, Presby was a game opponent for an Iowa crew that improved to 19-0 on the season. Carina Giangeruso, Paige Wehrmeister, and Maddie Kubicki were able to snare a personal victory in the scrap with the Hawkeyes.

- Those three went 10-0 together on Saturday, a truly impressive trio considering the quality of opponent that stood in their way. Overall, 27 wrestlers could be found in the Empire State who were polled at least 10th in their respective weight class.

UP NEXT

- Only two more dates remain on PC's calendar until postseason time, headed back to a tournament setting in seven days for the Bobcat Open in Frostburg, Maryland.

- This will be Presbyterian's last opportunity for tournament action until the Southeast Regional bracket in late February, re-entering a tourney where they achieved two 1st-place prizes and a couple of bronze medals last spring.

- Frostburg's invitational will begin at approximately 9:00 AM on Feb. 1, incorporating a PC squad who has obtained a ridiculous 24 individual titles to this point.
