HOW IT HAPPENED
- Presbyterian wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the first inning.
Trey Fenderson launched a solo home run in his first at-bat, followed by singles from
Jake Randolph,
Amman Dewberry, and
Matthew Rollison to give the Blue Hose an early 2-0 lead.
- PC exploded in the second inning, tallying a season-high seven runs on five hits.
Jackson Hugus led off with a walk before
Brody Linker doubled to left center, putting two runners in scoring position.
Andrew Albertus then grounded out to the pitcher but plated Hugus in the process. Fenderson, already with a home run, added an RBI single to score Linker. After Randolph singled and stole second, Dewberry delivered a two-RBI single to left center. Following a Winthrop pitching change, Hugus drew a bases-loaded walk, and Linker capped the inning with a two-RBI single, extending the lead to 9-0.
- In the third, Albertus and Fenderson hit back-to-back singles before Dewberry's sacrifice fly brought Albertus home. Rollison then crushed his first collegiate home run over the left center field wall, pushing the Blue Hose advantage to 12-0.
- Winthrop got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, but PC remained in control with a 12-1 lead.
- The Eagles cut into the deficit in the fourth, scoring three runs to make it 12-4 after holding the Blue Hose scoreless for the first time.
- Randolph responded in the fifth, belting a solo homer over the right field wall to stretch the lead to 13-4. Winthrop answered with an RBI double in the bottom half, bringing the score to 13-5.
- Presbyterian added another run in the sixth as
Mikah Conner reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Hugus then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Conner to score. Winthrop responded with an unearned run in the bottom half, making it 14-6.
- The Blue Hose continued their offensive surge in the seventh. Fenderson was hit by a pitch, and Randolph followed with his fourth hit of the day—a double that allowed Fenderson to score from first. Moments later, Rollison crushed his second home run of the game, extending the lead to 17-6.
- Winthrop hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Hugus answered with a solo shot of his own in the eighth. The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom half, but Presbyterian still held a commanding 10-run advantage heading into the ninth.
