CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped the final game of its weekend Big South Conference series at Charleston Southern on Sunday, falling 5-2 at CSU Ballpark.
PC moves to 21-20 on the season and 8-7 in the Big South while Charleston Southern improves to 17-23 and 7-8 in league play. The Blue Hose next travel to Charlotte for a Tuesday tilt against the 49ers at 6 p.m.
Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) each posted two hits for the Blue Hose and Paul picked up the team's lone RBI.
Bud Jeter (5-3) took the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out three. Chad Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) sparkled in relief, holding the Buccaneers to only one hit and no runs in 3.2 innings.
PC scored both its runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2 following Buccaneer runs in the second and third innings. Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Two outs later, Paul singled to drive in the centerfielder and put PC on the board. Robby Swab (Kernersville, S.C.) then walked and was eventually caught in a rundown while Paul scored during the play.
Unfortunately for PC, the Blue Hose would not score again and the Buccaneers added one more in the fourth and two more in the fifth. A wild pitch brought in one to break the tie before a throwing error and an RBI single plated a pair and gave the home side all the runs it would need.
Sanders entered the game in the fifth game and dominated on the mound. The junior escaped a jam in the sixth and retired the side in order in the eighth to keep PC within striking distance.
Ryan Gunther earned the win for the Buccaneers, throwing seven innings. Austin Weekley picked up the save.
